What the Bali 4.5 actually is

The Bali 4.5 didn't just launch a model. It launched an entire brand. Conceived by Olivier Poncin and drawn by naval architect Xavier Faÿ, it debuted at the Cannes Boat Show in September 2014 as the first hull from Bali Catamarans, the charter-focused sub-brand of Catana Group. Production ran through approximately 2019, when the successor Bali 4.6 was announced at the Cannes Yachting Festival. The builder has never published production numbers for the 4.5, so the true total remains unknown.

Built at Catana's main factory in Canet-en-Roussillon, France, the 4.5 introduced the "Open Space" concept that now defines the Bali line: a solid padded foredeck replacing the traditional trampoline, and a retractable aft saloon door that creates a single-level indoor-outdoor living zone. The hull is GRP/polyester with closed-cell PVC foam sandwich, built using a vacuum-infused resin process. Interior design was by Hervé Couëdel of Couëdel Yacht Design.

Available in 3- or 4-cabin layouts with matching heads, the boat was offered with a starboard side helm or a flybridge. Most hulls entered charter fleets. Dream Yacht Charter was the initial US distributor, which means used examples are typically high-hour ex-charter boats. Assume charter history unless you have documents proving otherwise.

Sailing performance

Under sail

This is where honesty matters. The upwind sail area of 121 m² (main 72 m², self-tacking jib 39 m²) is modest for a 13.60 m, 11-tonne catamaran. Fixed skegs replace the daggerboards used on the parent Catana line, a deliberate trade-off for charter simplicity that limits upwind VMG compared to daggerboard competitors. The solent sheet track, positioned ahead of the mast, can cause the headsail to curve back on itself. SAIL Magazine's test reviewer called this a "wind brake" effect. That description is accurate.

Below Force 3, expect to run the engines. One owner on Cruisers Forum put it bluntly: "The boat's worst part is the sailing ability which is close to none" (yeloya, Cruisers Forum, November 2020). That's a strong claim, but the physics support it. A heavy solid foredeck adding forward weight, no daggerboards, and a small headsail combine to produce a boat that needs consistent wind to move meaningfully under canvas.

The flybridge version adds another compromise. The boom must be raised to provide headroom, which reduces mainsail area and adds topweight. The side-helm version preserves the full rig.

Under power

Standard engines are 2 × 40 hp Nanni (Kubota) diesels on saildrives, with optional 50–60 hp upgrades. Later hulls offered Volvo Penta or Yanmar 57 hp units. With the standard 40 hp engines, test results showed 6.8 kn at 2,000 rpm and 8.6 kn at wide-open throttle (3,200 rpm). The 50 hp upgrade pushes that to 8–9.5 kn. One detail worth knowing: the saildrives are oriented 180° reversed, with rudders sitting aft of the propellers for better control.

Fuel capacity is 800 L. Fresh water capacity matches at 800 L.

Living space and layout

The Open Space concept is the reason this boat sells. The retractable aft door erases the boundary between cockpit and saloon, creating a connected entertaining area that genuinely changes how you use the boat at anchor. Sailing rig compromises

The self-tacking jib is convenient for shorthanded sailing, but its sheeting angle reduces upwind efficiency. Flybridge ergonomics

Missing anchor bridle cleat

As of August 2026, the used market for the Bali 4.5 shows approximately 18–22 unique listings worldwide, with around 15 on the boats.com/YachtWorld network and 4 on Band of Boats (covering 2016–2019 build years). Additional listings appear on YachtAll, Catamarans.com, and Multihulls World classifieds.

Confirmed asking prices range from approximately €220,000 to €380,000. Two specific data points from YachtAll (as of August 2026): a 2018 hull with 6 cabins and Volvo Penta 2 × 60 hp in Martinique at €290,000, and a 2018 hull with 6 cabins in Croatia at €299,900. Both are ex-charter boats, which is typical. The indicative P25 sits at approximately €245,000 and the P75 at approximately €330,000.

Early hulls (2015–2016) are expected at the lower end of the range, around €220,000–€250,000, while well-maintained private boats push toward €330,000–€380,000. Those are rarer finds. What to check before you buy

  • Engine make and hours: Confirm whether you're looking at Nanni, Volvo Penta, or Yanmar units. Research local parts availability for whichever is fitted.
  • Charter history: Most 4.5 hulls were chartered. Request full maintenance logs and pay for a thorough survey, particularly of saildrives and standing rigging.

Verdict

The Bali 4.5 is a liveaboard platform that happens to have a mast. If that sentence makes you angry, this isn't your boat. If it makes you nod, read on.

What Olivier Poncin got right was the living space. The Open Space concept genuinely changed catamaran design, and every competitor has since copied elements of it. The solid foredeck, the connected saloon-to-cockpit flow, the 615 L fridge: these are practical advantages that make daily life aboard measurably better than on conventionally laid-out cats of the same era.

What the design traded away was windward ability. Fixed skegs, modest sail area, and forward weight make the 4.5 sluggish in light air and weak upwind. If your cruising grounds reliably deliver Force 3 or above, this matters less. Sail the Adriatic in July and you will motor. A lot.

On the used market, the Bali 4.5 offers good value if you shop carefully. At the indicative P25 of approximately €245,000 (as of August 2026), you get a CE Category A ocean-certified 45-footer with a clever layout and proven build quality. Inspect ruthlessly, though. Most hulls have charter miles, and engine provenance varies. Prioritise the side-helm version. Confirm your engine make. Budget for a bridle cleat and a proper survey.
