Discovery Yachts
Discovery built deck saloon ocean cruisers in Southampton from 1998 to 2022 — a yard founded by Sunsail's John Charnley and his wife Caroline, who wanted one boat for their own two-handed circumnavigation and ended up with a shipyard when hull #001 sold at the 2000 Southampton Boat Show. The signature idea across the range, drawn by Ron Holland, was the interior watchkeeping station: a warm, dry ocean watch with a 270-degree view of the sea.
Roughly 53 Discovery 55s and a family of larger sisters later, the yard's story turned corporate and dark: crowdfunding in 2018, administration in 2019 on the day it lost a High Court case over a hurriedly delivered 58, liquidation in 2022, a failed successor in 2023. In 2024 the brand and its original tooling were acquired by Ocean Discovery Yachts of Plymouth, with Ron Holland's former design director at the drawing board. The boats, meanwhile, keep crossing oceans — supported not by a factory but by the brokers and specialists who know them.
