Solaris

Solaris has built sailing yachts in Aquileia since 1974, at the top of the Adriatic where the slipway is reached by canal and Roman port ruins lie beyond the yard fence. For most of its life the company traded as Serigi, a quiet builder of conservative Doug Peterson cruisers known mostly inside Italy. The turn came when Javier Soto Acebal, an Argentine designer recommended by Wally founder Luca Bassani, took over the drawing board: flush decks, full-width sterns, every line led to the helm. The Solaris 50 took Europe's Yacht of the Year title in 2016, and the yard has been shorthand for Italian performance-cruising elegance since.

Production stays deliberately small, and one habit sets Aquileia apart even among louder names: before tooling begins, every new interior is built full-size in wood — a practice shared, among series builders, with almost nobody but Nautor's Swan.
