What you’d actually do with her

This is a large classic ocean sailing yacht for long passages with a crew. Typical use: ocean crossings, a season of extended passages between countries and islands, living aboard for months at a time, and classic yacht regattas without modification. She wants a crew: several experienced people for comfortable passage-making, a capable couple only with the ketch rig, good systems and real preparation. The ketch divides the sail area into smaller, lighter pieces, which is what makes short-handed handling realistic on a boat this size. Owning her means running an old, complex vessel: plan for continuous maintenance the way you would for a historic house, with the budget to match. Low-effort marina weekends and casual daysailing are not her genre: she is a passage-maker that rewards use and constant care.

The boat that won the first race around the world

In 1973 a Mexican businessman who made his money in washing machines bought hull number three of a new Finnish design, skipped the insurance to save the premium for repairs, and entered the first crewed race around the planet. In the Southern Ocean his boat was rolled by a breaking wave. The crew bailed, patched, carried on, and won.

The boat was Sayula II. The race was the first Whitbread, 1973–74. And the design was the Swan 65: Sparkman & Stephens project number 2110, built by Nautor in Finland, at its launch the largest series-built fiberglass yacht in the world. Ramón Carlín’s overall win, corrected time 133 days, did for Nautor what no advertisement could. Four years later three Swan 65s finished second, fourth and fifth in the next Whitbread, one of them skippered by Clare Francis, the first woman to skipper a boat in the race. Fifty years on, the very hull Francis raced went back around the world in the Ocean Globe Race and won its first two legs before the old laminate finally cried enough.

That is the boat on the used market today: forty-one hulls, all now around half a century old, carrying the strongest racing pedigree of any production sailing yacht of the era, and carrying, too, half a century of teak, tanks, wiring and rigging. Buying one is less like buying a boat and more like acquiring a listed building with a mast. The reward is real. So is the bill.

A forum regular calls the Nautor Swan 65 the best bluewater boat in the world, ever, “past, present and future,” and advises readers not to argue.

Against that, Vittorio Malingri, who refitted one for a round-the-world race, found under the epoxy filler (translated from Italian) “three layers of laminate that were being troweled away like rotten plaster.”

Both are describing the same model. The distance between those two sentences is the subject of this dossier.

The yard that invented the luxury fiberglass yacht

Nautor was founded in 1966 in Pietarsaari, on Finland’s west coast, by Pekka Koskenkylä, who believed a fiberglass yacht could be built to the standard of the best custom wooden ones. The bet paid off so completely that “Swan” became shorthand for the entire category. The 65 was the yard’s moonshot: introduced as the new flagship, drawn by Sparkman & Stephens at the height of their powers, and built to Lloyd’s Register rules with a solid hand-laid hull at a time when nobody had attempted a production glassfiber yacht of this size.

The scale of the thing forced the yard into self-reliance. Most of the deck gear, blocks and fittings were manufactured in-house, simply because the market had no hardware designed for loads this large. It was Koskenkylä himself who offered hull number three to Ramón Carlín. The design, according to S&S’s own commentary, drew on their successful aluminum one-off Dora IV; the 65 translated that pedigree into series production, 41 hulls between 1972 and 1989, the longest production run Nautor ever had.

Hull #036, Evrika, belonged for 25 years to Richard Wright, the keyboardist of Pink Floyd, who used her solely for cruising the Mediterranean and Caribbean. When Berthon listed her for sale after her Ocean Globe Race circumnavigation, four framed Pink Floyd albums still hung in the forward cabin.

What kind of boat is this — if you’re seeing her for the first time

The Swan 65 is a 19.7-metre fiberglass sailing yacht, most often rigged as a ketch, built for ocean passages with a crew. Three things define her for a first-time viewer.

She is built like almost nothing built since. The hull is solid hand-laid fiberglass with no core, laminated to Lloyd’s Register survey. The deck and coachroof are foam sandwich, laid under acres of teak. This construction is heavy, repairable and, when healthy, immensely strong: the same hull that was rolled in the Southern Ocean in 1973 was still winning ocean race legs in 2024. The qualifier “when healthy” is where the buying section of this dossier lives.

There are two boats hiding under one name. Up to hull #019 the 65 displaced 31,800 kg with 10,400 kg of ballast, a 31% ballast ratio. From hull #020 the yard added lead: 13,900 kg of ballast, 35,300 kg displacement, 39%. The late boats are measurably stiffer and more powerful upwind. On a fifty-year-old classic this series split matters as much as anything on the survey.

The ketch rig is the point. Most of the 41 hulls are ketches. Splitting a thousand square feet of working sail across two masts keeps each piece small enough for a small crew to handle, and owners consistently name this as what makes the boat livable. A handful were delivered as sloops, faster upwind on paper and more demanding in practice; the racing hulls (King’s Legend, ADC Accutrac) were among them.

Living with her: the people who’ve sailed her far

The Swan 65’s sea manners are the settled part of her reputation. She is heavy, sea-kindly and relentless rather than quick by modern standards; owners report cruising averages above 7 knots and the ability to keep making miles in weather that parks lighter boats.

They describe her as “a joy to sail, always assuring [them] of her strength and reliability,” and note that with the aluminium ketch rig she “can easily be handled by two crew when cruising.”

The interior was drawn for crewed passage-making: up to twelve berths in four cabin spaces, a big practical galley and chart table, secure sea berths. It is a layout from an age when a 65-footer assumed paid or plentiful hands, and it shows in both the good (everything has a handhold) and the dated (nobody today needs twelve berths, and many boats have been converted).

The racing record is not a museum exhibit; it is a living data set on what these hulls survive. In the 1977–78 Whitbread, King’s Legend took second, Disque d’Or fourth and Clare Francis’s ADC Accutrac fifth, an extraordinary showing for a production cruiser against custom boats. In 2023 the same ADC Accutrac, refitted as Translated 9, won the first leg of the Ocean Globe Race outright, 7,305 miles from Southampton to Cape Town. What happened to her afterwards belongs to the next section, because it is the most instructive thing a Swan 65 buyer can read.

The episode gave world sailing one of its most quoted lines: “the best bilge pump of all is a bucket in the hands of a frightened man.”

Sayula was a standard production hull. She was rolled to roughly 180 degrees, righted herself, and won the race.

The refit question: €210,000 boat, €1.8 million restoration

Here is the argument that actually decides purchases in this class, and it is about money and laminate, not sail plans.

The charge sheet comes from Vittorio Malingri, one of Italy’s most experienced ocean sailors, who bought the 1974 hull ex-ADC Accutrac in semi-abandoned condition and rebuilt her for the Ocean Globe Race. His published account is the most detailed public autopsy of an unrestored Swan 65 in existence.

“Designed to weigh 26.5 tonnes... the first ones weigh 31/32 tonnes empty.” On the deck: teak “glued with the wrong and bad silicone, with all the screws of the first deck cut or missing and with open holes, a lot of rot to remove, and a lot of water inside the sandwich.” Below: “a jungle of cables and pipes prevented access to the hull almost everywhere,” and under old epoxy filler, “three layers of laminate that were being troweled away like rotten plaster.” At the mast: “the galvanized steel spar, which holds the ballast studs, rusted and very corroded under the mast (a defect of the S&S series and following).”

The defence is the market’s other half. Venator, hull #004, was stripped and rebuilt between 2004 and 2006 at a documented cost above €1.8 million, won “Best Maintained Swan” at the Rolex Swan Cup, and is offered at €875,000. Saida, Evrika and other restored hulls trade in the €575,000–875,000 band and go on crossing oceans. The boats are restorable, demonstrably, to a standard that wins trophies fifty years after launch.

And then there is the cautionary coda. In February 2024, deep in the Southern Ocean and leading the Ocean Globe Race, Translated 9 developed two cracks in the stern near the rudder skeg, one of them, in Yachting Monthly’s words, “big enough to sink the boat in heavy weather,” with the hull laminate torn and flexing. Repairs in the Falklands failed with visible delamination from the original laminate, and the team’s IRC campaign was over. A racing hull, driven hard, with a complicated refit history: the case does not condemn the class. It does tell you exactly where to send your surveyor.

The honest takeaway for a buyer: there is no cheap Swan 65. There are restored boats priced like restored boats, and unrestored boats whose price is a down payment on the yard bill. The difference between the two ends of the market, several hundred thousand euros, is roughly the cost of the work, and the fully documented worst case ran past €1.8 million. Buy the refit file, not the brochure.

Teak decks and the sandwich beneath them

Many hulls have had the teak replaced at least twice in fifty years. The original construction put thousands of screw holes through the upper skin of a cored deck, and every one is a potential path for water into the foam. Demand the deck history: when replaced, by whom, glued or screwed, and insist on moisture readings across the sandwich. Malingri’s boat had “a lot of water inside the sandwich” and rot to cut out. Deck condition is the single biggest cost variable on the boat.

Keel bolts: AISI 316, cast into the lead, non-removable

The S&S Swan Association’s engineering paper is unambiguous. The bolts (for the 65: seventeen M24 and twelve M30) are cast into the keel and cannot be removed; the stainless is prone to thread galling, so nuts must be harder than the bolts, A4-70 or AISI 329 grade; the keel plank slot around each bolt must be completely filled with mastic down to the lead, because water pockets cause invisible crevice corrosion. And a detail worth printing in bold: graphite-based grease must never touch these threads, as it corrodes the stainless. Ask when the nuts were last lifted and torqued, and by whom.

The steel at the mast step

Three independent sources converge on one node: the galvanized steel structure under the mast that carries the ballast studs. Malingri found his “rusted and very corroded” and calls it a defect of the series; the Association recommends any replacement mast step be made of SAF 2205 duplex steel, noting ordinary AISI 316 is not suitable there; Evrika’s Ocean Globe Race preparation included replacing her internal metal keelson as “the most important and major work.” Get a surveyor into this area with a torch and a hammer. It is not a quick look.

Tanks, at least ten of them

Fuel (around 1,000 litres) and water (757 litres) live in multiple stainless tanks, at least five per system. Fifty-year-old stainless tanks range from faultless to perforated depending on history; Malingri’s refit involved professional inspection of fifteen tanks. Ask which have been cleaned, pressure-tested or replaced, and check for diesel bug and standing-water corrosion.

Electrics and plumbing

Original systems are half a century old, and many boats carry, in Malingri’s phrase, systems “partly original and partly tinkered with as best as possible.” A properly rewired boat (most conversions are to 24V) with a documented schematic is worth a real premium. Original Baby Blake toilets were infamous for leaking; most have been replaced, but check.

Rig age

Original spars were aluminum with stainless wire and Norseman terminals, winches by Lewmar, Barient or Barlow. Establish the age of the standing rigging and whether the masts have ever been dye-tested. A 65-foot ketch carries two of everything, and re-rigging is priced accordingly. Toerail and bulwark stud replacement is a known, needed job across the fleet; on one hull it ran to roughly €40,000 in 2010.

Stern and rudder skeg

After the Translated 9 case, no survey of a hard-used hull should skip the aft sections: laminate condition around the skeg, signs of flexing, old repairs and their bond to the original laminate.

Which series

Hulls from #020 carry 3.5 tonnes more ballast and a 39% ratio against 31% for #001–019. If stiffness and sail-carrying power matter to your plans, the late boats have the advantage; the early boats answer with lighter displacement and, often, longer racing biographies. Know which one you are surveying before you fall in love.

Swan 65 price and market: two markets wearing one name

The market splits cleanly in half, and the halves barely compete with each other.

Unrestored or lightly maintained boats anchor the bottom: Arion, hull #037 of 1983, a one-family boat without charter history, is offered at €210,000. Eve (#035) sits at €370,000. These are entry tickets, not finished purchases; price the refit before you price the boat.

Restored boats live in another bracket entirely: Saida (#005, refit 2023) at €575,000, Evrika (#036, fresh from a circumnavigation) at €625,000, and Venator (#004, the €1.8M restoration) at €875,000. The restoration cost is the invisible line item explaining the spread: the delta between a project boat and a sorted one is approximately the yard bill, documented in the worst case at seven figures.

Roughly five hulls of the 41 are publicly listed at any moment, a high fraction for the fleet size: unlike some classics, Swan 65s do come up for sale. What is genuinely scarce is a boat with a complete, invoiced refit history. The new Frers-designed Swan 65 of 2018 onward is an unrelated boat at €3.5–4.5 million secondhand and should not appear in your comparisons except by accident of the name.

Swan 65 vs Swan 651, Nicholson 55 and Ocean 71: what buyers actually compare

Swan 651 is the in-house successor: German Frers instead of S&S, 1982–91, around 18–19 hulls, longer waterline, deeper keel, a more modern boat in every measurable way, with its own Whitbread résumé (Fazer Finland, third in 1985–86). It trades higher, roughly $500,000 to $1.2 million, and answers the question “what if I want the legend with ten fewer years on it.”

Nicholson 55 is the budget path to the same era: Camper & Nicholson’s 1971 design, 26 hulls of which 12 served the Royal Navy, and second place in the first Whitbread (Adventure). Smaller, simpler, markedly cheaper at roughly €150,000–350,000, with a fraction of the maintenance surface.

Ocean 71 is the bigger, rarer alternative: Van de Stadt’s 21.6-metre design, production count disputed between 16 and about 25, famous through the charter boats and Ocean Spirit’s Round Britain win. More boat, thinner support network.

Baltic 64 deserves a mention as the other S&S option: designed by the same office, built 1988–97 by Baltic, only five hulls. Newer and stiffer, and almost never for sale.

One warning about a famous name: Flyer, the winner of the 1977–78 Whitbread, is frequently miscalled a Swan 65. She was a one-off aluminum S&S ketch built by Royal Huisman, a different design entirely. The Swan 65s in that race were King’s Legend, Disque d’Or and ADC Accutrac. Brokers occasionally blur this; now you won’t.

The community’s formula: maximum legend per euro and a living class, Swan 65; the same idea a decade newer, Swan 651; the era on a smaller budget, Nicholson 55; more boat and more rarity, Ocean 71.

Open questions

This dossier doesn’t pretend to omniscience. The original new-boat price of the Swan 65 in the 1970s has not surfaced in any accessible archive; the likeliest sources (period Yachting World issues, Nautor brochures, the Carlín documentary The Weekend Sailor) await direct access. The oft-quoted figure of exactly four sloop-rigged hulls rests on a single Yachting World article and is not confirmed by Nautor primary documents. A complete hull-by-hull registry with build dates sits in the closed section of the S&S Swan Association. And first-hand accounts from current cruising owners, as opposed to racing crews and brokers, are thinner than we’d like. Owner interviews are underway; their testimony will join the next revision.

What are the known problems of the Swan 65?

Did a Swan 65 really win the Whitbread?

Yes. Sayula II, hull #003, a standard production boat, won the first Whitbread Round the World Race 1973–74 overall on corrected time, surviving a Southern Ocean capsize on the way. Three Swan 65s then placed second, fourth and fifth in the 1977–78 edition. Flyer, the 1977–78 winner, was a different S&S design, not a Swan 65.

Swan 65 or Swan 651?

The 651 (Frers, 1982–91) is newer, longer on the waterline, deeper-keeled and quicker, at a higher price. The S&S 65 has the deeper legend, the larger fleet (41 vs about 19) and the classic profile. Both are crewed classics with classic-sized maintenance bills; the choice is era and budget more than quality.
