about Fountaine Pajot

If you actually want to sail the boat rather than lounge on it, Fountaine Pajot sits in a different category from most charter catamarans. The French builder, independent since 1976 and still based in Aigues-Mortes, designs hulls with sharper entry angles and lighter displacement than the mainstream competition. That pays off upwind, where a Fountaine Pajot will point and move through chop in ways that heavier, more volume-oriented cats simply cannot match. The tradeoff is real: you get less flybridge real estate than a comparable Lagoon, and the interiors, while well-finished, are not engineered around the assumption that the boat will spend most of its life at anchor.

That distinction matters for both buyers and charterers. New boats range from around €380,000 to €780,000, which puts them in serious company, and the models we cover — the Isla 40, Elba 45, and Tanna 47 — each make a slightly different argument for who should be writing that cheque. The Tanna 47 is built around bluewater passage-making; the Elba 45 sits closer to the premium charter market without abandoning sailing manners; the Isla 40 is the entry point for sailors who want performance without full offshore ambition.

This is not the brand for someone who wants a floating apartment that occasionally moves between anchorages. It is the brand for someone who reads wind forecasts before booking a week, and considers a good beat to windward part of the holiday rather than an inconvenience.
