What you’d actually do with her

The Valiant 40 is a 40-foot American ocean cruiser, built 1973–1992, conceived to answer one question: why should a boat for sailing around the world have to be slow? You’d live aboard as a couple, log 150–165-mile days on passage, anchor where charter fleets never go — and negotiate on a used market where the same hull is worth three times more or less depending on which resin it was laminated with. This is a boat for someone ready to buy a fifty-year-old hull with the best ocean résumé in its class — and the most famous production drama in the history of American boatbuilding.

The boat that proved a cruiser didn’t have to be slow

In 1972 three parties converged in Seattle: Nathan Rothman, who wanted to build boats; Bob Perry, who wanted to draw them; and Stan and Sylvia Dabney, who wanted a fast hull to sail around the world. Perry had not a single production design to his name. He took the fashionable underbody of a racing yacht — fin keel, skeg-hung rudder, cutaway forefoot — and dressed it in a traditional silhouette with a canoe stern, copied, by his own admission, from a photograph of Aage Nielsen’s Holger Danske that Rothman had sent him with the note: “Let’s have a stern like that.”

The result broke the genre. A displacement-to-length ratio around 256, when the typical cruiser of the day carried 400. The term “performance cruiser” entered the language largely because of this boat. SAIL named her “Cruising Boat of the Decade” (1980); in 1997 she was inducted into the American Sailboat Hall of Fame — one of only 26 American production designs ever admitted.

Perry never pretended to neutrality:

“I chose the Valiant for the cruising category because it is generally considered the boat that began the move to ‘performance cruisers’… And yes, I can’t deny it, I am the proud designer of the V-40.”

Asked which of his own designs he’d take voyaging, he didn’t hesitate: “If I was going to go voyaging, I’d probably take a Valiant 40 with a taller carbon-fiber stick. The Valiant does everything well, and it’s strong and forgiving” (boats.com, 2004).

About the canoe stern, though, he is honest to the point of indecency: it entered the design “more for its looks than seakeeping characteristics and as a blatant attempt to tap into the success of the Westsail 32.” The Westsail took cruising mainstream — “unfortunately, the Westsail 32 didn’t sail very well.” The Valiant was the answer: the same romance of silhouette, on a boat that actually sails.

Verdict

Which Valiant, exactly

It is easy to be wrong here by tens of thousands of dollars, so point by point.

Valiant 40 ≠ Valiant 42. From 1993 the Texas yard built the Valiant 42 — the same Perry hull with a bowsprit, a new deck, a new keel and more ballast. It is a different boat with a different market; in this dossier it appears only as context.

Hull numbering starts at 101. “Hull No. 1” in owner conversations means hull #101. From there, four eras — and they matter more than the model year:

  • #101–119 (1973–1975), Uniflite, Bellingham WA. The early pre-blister boats. Conventional polyester resin.
  • #120–249 (1976 to early 1981), Uniflite. The blister era: Hetron fire-retardant resin. The core of this dossier’s drama.
  • #250–266 (1981–1984), Uniflite, transitional. Isophthalic resin, “less blister prone.” Who exactly built #260–266 is not documented; every sign points to late Uniflite hulls, but no source closes the question.
  • #267–~300 (1985–1992), Valiant Yachts, Texas (Rich Worstell, Lake Texoma). Isophthalic resin, epoxy barrier coats, semi-custom construction. Effectively blister-immune.

Variants within the model: exactly 10 pilothouse versions (all 1980–81, all blister-era); at least three centerboard boats; custom keel drafts from 5'2" to 6'0" in two-inch increments. A separate branch of the family is the Esprit 37 / Valiant 37 — the smaller sister “by the same formula,” with a twist a buyer must know: Nordic-built Esprits (1977–80) are blister-free, while Uniflite-built ones (~1980–82) carry the same disease.

The people and the yards: from Seattle to a Texas lake

Rothman founded Valiant in 1973 and placed production with Uniflite — a military contractor in Bellingham, Washington, that had built fiberglass patrol craft for Vietnam. The yard’s military origin would become the seed of the catastrophe: Hetron, a fire-retardant resin developed for US Army riverine boats, would find its way into sailing hulls.

What followed was a chain of ownership unusual even by boatbuilding standards. Rothman sold to Sam Dick Industries; two owners, Sam Dick and Dane Nelson, wanted a pilothouse version — Rothman refused, so “well, we’ll make one ourselves”: they bought the company and built ten. Uniflite then bought Valiant outright. In 1984 — after a plant fire (April 8, 1980, the main building destroyed), a lost class action and a market downturn — Uniflite went to Chris-Craft at $10 a share.

A dealer saved the model. Rich Worstell, a Valiant owner and dealer, bought the molds in 1984 and moved production to Lake Texoma in Texas — building ocean boats a thousand kilometers from the ocean. Practice changed radically: 100% isophthalic resin, catalyzed a gallon at a time, hand layup, roughly 21 mils of epoxy barrier on the bottom, and buyers invited to the factory three times during a build. Practical Sailor: “You’ll be hard pressed to find another builder who was more dedicated to his product than Rich Worstell.” Valiant Yachts closed in 2011; the V40 itself ended in 1992, replaced by the 42.

What kind of boat is this — if you’re seeing her for the first time

The Valiant 40 is a 40-foot fiberglass cutter with a canoe stern, a skeg-hung rudder and a solid, uncored hull. Three things separate her from everything moored alongside.

She’s fast by the standards of her tribe. A D/L of 256 and the sharpest underbody of her day translate into a currency owners measure not in knots but in days:

She’s built like a working tool. Solid uncored hull laminate, a skeg with a welded-steel armature, the mast stepped on an aluminum H-beam over the floors — sidestepping the classic mast-step corrosion problem entirely. The boats.com owner survey reads like a destruction-test log: one hull “withstood an 18-hour assault by a whale,” another survived three and a half weeks in the surf, a third six hours grinding on a reef. “V40s have fallen off countless breaking waves in the Southern Ocean without structural damage.”

Her biography is the racing and voyaging history of the class. Bill and Mary Black, hull #107 Foreign Affair: circumnavigation 1975–79 and the Cruising Club of America’s Blue Water Medal. Francis Stokes, hull #122 Mooneshine: first American monohull to finish the 1976 OSTAR, class winner in the 1980 OSTAR, and a Newport–Bermuda record that stood for ten years. Dan Byrne, hull #101 Fantasy: a former Los Angeles Times editor, the elder statesman of the fleet, who brought the very first hull through both Southern Ocean legs of the inaugural 1982–83 BOC Challenge to finish 5th in Class II after 228 days. And Schrader, hull #252 Resourceful: the first American solo circumnavigation via the five southern capes — 27,188 miles in 199 days, then a record.

Living with her: half a century of owner experience

To windward the boat is honest but not brilliant. The bow flare that keeps her decks dry is, by Perry’s own admission, her weak point in a short head sea: “The fineness in the bow quickly gives way through flare to a broad deck, producing a very dry boat but a boat that isn’t at its best in a steep chop.” An acquaintance of SpinSheet’s reviewer, beating from Florida to the Virgin Islands, remembered pounding so severe that “he could not sleep.” Real-world tacking angles from owner surveys run 90–100 degrees, not the 85 of the brochures.

Crack off, and the boat opens up. Practical Sailor: “as soon as you bear off… the boat becomes very powerful, especially on a reach or broad reach in heavy air.” Schrader, from the cockpit: “Rumbling along on a deep reach with a big following sea is something to experience from the Valiant’s safe cockpit.”

The cockpit is small — a position, not an oversight.

“The cockpit is small and somewhat uncomfortable. However, the molded bulwark that makes working the foredeck in a blow less terrifying is one of my favorite features.”

Tankage varies by era: figure roughly 90–110 gallons of fuel (aluminum; two saddle tanks on genset boats) and around 140 gallons of water in polyethylene on later hulls. Tropical ventilation rests on two dorades and a mushroom vent; owners rate it 8/10 while admitting half of it is retrofit. The icebox insulation is thin for the tropics.

Fresh voices confirm the old statistics. Mark Bunch, Texas-built hull #278, writing in July 2025 from the North Pacific: “We will have over 11k miles logged from California, Mexico, French Polynesia, Hawaii, and back to California over 9 months.” The boats.com owner-survey averages: living aboard 9/10, offshore voyaging 9.5/10.

The blister debate: cosmetic or structural

No boat in the canon has a production defect so fused with the model’s identity. Let’s take it apart carefully, because the entire price structure of the used market stands on this dispute.

The undisputed facts. From 1976 to early 1981 (hulls ~120–249), Uniflite laminated Valiants with Hetron — the fire-retardant resin its military contracts required. Hulls developed blisters up to 10 inches in diameter — on topsides, deck and cabinhouse, above and below the waterline. This is not osmosis.

His own Uniflite Valiant never blistered in the cool Northwest — but would, he said, if cruised south to Mexico. “And always deck-first.”

Owners filed a class action and won; Uniflite went under in 1984 shortly after. The settlement was sealed by the court — participants are barred from discussing it, and the parties and sums remain unavailable to this day. That is a documented dead end, not a research gap.

The dispute is over severity. The cosmetic camp: SpinSheet — “there were 200 Valiant 40s built, and less than 20% have been reported to have severe blistering problems. I do not know of any reported sinking or catastrophic failure resulting from these blisters.” In half a century, not one documented hull loss from blisters. The structural camp: a Sailing Anarchy poster — “I think in the case of the V40, the blisters ARE structural (as opposed to most boats where blisters seldom penetrate more than the first layer of mat behind the gelcoat).” The pockets occur at variable depths in the laminate, not just under the gelcoat.

The repair is round two of the same argument. The canonical fix is a full peel of the outer laminate (“until you can ‘see through it like a pane of glass’”), months of drying — the genre classic being the California and Mexico desert — then relamination. The cost anchor, from Marina Shipyard in Long Beach: $125–175 per foot of length. Stan Dabney, Valiant co-founder turned broker: “there is only one way to properly repair a badly blistered Valiant. You have to peel the boat down to a mere shell and then fiberglass it. It is a big job.” But recurrence is documented: “some reappearing after only two years while others have not had the problem resurface after ten” (Sailboat Guide); one peeled and re-gelcoated deck “blistered back within 5 years” (SailNet). Patrick and Rebecca Childress filmed a complete second repair of hull #134 Brick House in 2019 — roughly twenty years after the first: “simply peeling to a particular depth may not be the best way to go as the blisters originate in variable depths throughout the laminate.”

The honest takeaway for a buyer. Valiant blisters don’t sink boats — but they aren’t reliably cured either. The right frame is not “cosmetic or structural” but “a chronic condition with a manageable course”: a blister boat’s discount must cover a full peel of hull AND deck with margin for recurrence, or the repair must come documented with years of observed history. A 26-year owner on SailNet closes the argument better than any surveyor:

“We own one of the ‘blister boats’ and had the blister repair job done, but some of the blisters came back. Just little ones, but annoying. In the overall scheme of things, though, our old Valiant 40 has been a fabulous boat for us for 26 years.”

The hull number first, everything else second

The resin era outranks the year in the listing: the boundaries are #120 (blister era begins), #250 (isophthalic transition), #267 (first Texas hull). Check the HIN against the claimed era; on transitional hulls #260–266, ask for build documentation.

Blisters — by protocol, not by the seller’s assurances

“The Seller says, ‘don’t worry about them’” is a verbatim buyer’s quote from the Sailboat Owners forum, and it is the standard song. Sound the hull and measure depth: a pocket in structural laminate and a pimple under the gelcoat are different diagnoses. If a repair was done, demand the paperwork: who, when, whether the deck was peeled (the deck is the worst zone, and skipping it near-guarantees recurrence), and how many years of observation since.

Chainplates and the knees beneath them

Early boats had chainplates “on the light side” (Offshore Atlantic Yachts); pitting where the plate passes through the deck is documented, and — more important — cracking and delamination of the knees below. The Syzygy refit (hull #201) re-glassed the knees to the hull and upsized the plates from 5/16" to 3/8". The split cover plate on deck comes off — take it off and probe, don’t just look.

The balsa deck

The hull is solid; the deck is balsa-cored. Moisture-map around chainplates, stanchions, the windlass and the staysail track. “Spongy foredeck” comes from the question list of a veteran owner returning to the market.

Rudder and skeg

The skeg is not molded integrally: a welded-steel armature in foam and fiberglass, bolted and glassed to the hull. When Childress opened his rudder after decades of service, he found rusty internal steel and “rubbery foam”; his localized repair was publicly criticized on Attainable Adventure Cruising as unseaworthy. A rudder’s age is the age of its steel skeleton: budget to open or replace it.

Tanks

Aluminum water and fuel tanks “have not aged well and may need to be replaced” (Kretschmer); some boats carry stainless. The black-iron tanks that haunt the forums are documented on the Passport 40, not the V40 — but verify the material on the specific boat rather than assume. Replacing tanks inside glassed-in joinery is a major job.

Engine and systems

Original Westerbekes, Perkins and Volvos are at the end of their lives; a repower runs ~$15k, a full rewire $5–7k, an electronics suite $12–15k, and standing rigging before any ocean passage is non-negotiable. Paul Browning’s formula (Practical Sailor comments) for the whole category: such a boat “will likely need ALL NEW electrics (yes every wire and fitting), new sails, new electronics, new paint and little else, AND you’ll have a much better boat than those on offer today at a fraction of the cost.” And his pacing advice: “Spend NOTHING on it until you’ve spent a year sailing it exactly as it is.”

Stability — a separate honesty

No published AVS exists for the Valiant 40. Perry, flatly: “I didn’t do a stability study for the Valiant 40 till well after it was in production.” The circulating capsize screening figure of ~1.72–1.75 is arithmetically valid and favorable, but it is a screen, not a righting curve; the “125°” that floats around the internet belongs to the Valiant 50. For high-latitude plans, commission an inclining test on the specific hull rather than trusting forum numbers.

Valiant 40 price and market: three boats for the price of one model

The Valiant 40 market is really three markets, and the watershed runs along the resin.

Current anchors (about 8–12 genuinely distinct listings worldwide, allowing for cross-posting): blister-era Uniflite (1976–81) — from ~$25,000 for a project to ~$75,000; early pre-blister and late transitional Uniflite — ~$70,000–90,000, with well-repaired examples reaching ~$110,000–175,000; Texas boats (1985–92) — ~$105,000–174,000, the current top of the market at $174,000. For context: the last new V40, in 1992, was advertised “loaded” at about $285,000.

Against Schrader’s 2002 price ladder ($90–130k / $110–150k / $160–280k) the market has softened, hardest in the blister segment: project boats have slipped into the low $20,000s. Good Texas and early hulls, meanwhile, hold six figures nominally. The market is thin and illiquid by mass-production standards: by the late 1990s roughly half the boats built had never changed hands (Wave Train). Geography: the US West Coast and Pacific Northwest, Florida and the Chesapeake, plus active cruisers scattered worldwide.

The economics are simple and hard: a cheap blister boat easily overtakes a clean Texas boat on the all-in total. The discount is a repair fund, not a windfall.

Valiant 40 vs Passport, Pacific Seacraft and Tayana: what buyers actually compare

The comparison field is the American-Taiwanese school of 37–44 ft ocean cruisers — and half the field is also drawn by Perry: Passport 40, Tayana 37/42, Baba 40, Esprit 37.

Passport 40 is “the more evolved Perry”: the same hand, ten years later, without the canoe stern. The SailNet verdict: “While the boat might be newer, the Valiant 42 is actually a much older design than the Passport 40… I would call the Passport a much more evolved design.” And from the same threads, a direct ranking: “The Valiant is a better boat for a circum — but I think you would be fine on a Tayana 42 (and for that matter, the Passport too).”

Pacific Seacraft 40 (Crealock) is the chief rival in the survivability category. Unlike the Valiant, it has a published AVS (143°) and a propeller in a skeg aperture. A rec.boats.cruising buyer states the fork for everyone: “We (were/are) more interested in seakindliness and probable survival in a knockdown or roll-over, than performance… we felt rock-solid was better than the discomfort and fatigue that would come with a harried passage.”

Tayana 37 is the price of admission to the genre: more hulls, cheaper, the same Perry — but “dull in low winds,” by an owner’s own confession. The Valiant is the fast pole of this company: people buy her for the 150–165-mile days.

The formula of the field: maximum documented passage speed — Valiant; maximum numerical confidence in stability — Pacific Seacraft; budget entry to the genre — Tayana; the same school without the blister history and with a more modern feel — Passport.

Still open: who built hulls #260–266 and the exact last Texas hull number; a measured AVS (one likely never existed — though an inclining test on any single hull would close the question for that boat); the terms of the sealed class-action settlement (a dead end by design); new-boat prices for 1975 and 1985; a hull-by-hull registry of the ten pilothouse boats; and first-person heavy-weather accounts — hove-to, under drogue, lying ahull — aboard a V40 specifically: the boat’s Southern Ocean reputation stands on racing biographies, not published tactical reports. How much does a used Valiant 40 cost?

From roughly $25,000 for a blister-era project boat to about $174,000 for the best Texas-built hulls (August 2026). The resin era moves the price more than year or condition: blister-era Uniflites (#120–249) are the cheap entry with repair risk; Texas boats (#267+) are the top of the market.

What are the “blister boats,” and should I be afraid of them?

Hulls ~#120–249 (1976 to early 1981) were laminated with Hetron fire-retardant resin and develop non-osmotic blisters on hull, deck and cabinhouse. Valiant 40 or Pacific Seacraft 40?

The Valiant is faster on passage and carries an unmatched racing-and-voyaging pedigree, but has no published AVS. The Pacific Seacraft offers numerical certainty (AVS 143°), a gentler motion and a more modern hull. The classic fork: speed versus certificate.

Isn’t the Valiant 42 the same boat?

No. From 1993: the same Perry hull with a bowsprit, a new deck, a new keel and more ballast. A different boat, a different market, usually noticeably more expensive.

The Valiant 40 commands a strong cult following as the boat credited with creating the 'performance cruiser' category and its induction into the American Sailboat Hall of Fame sustains name-brand demand well above comparable 1970s–1980s cruisers of similar age.
