What the Bali 4.1 actually is
The Bali 4.1 is a 40-foot cruising catamaran, launched in April 2018 by Bali Catamarans (Catana Group) in Canet-en-Roussillon, France. It replaced the Bali 4.0, which ran to 154 hulls between September 2015 and April 2018. The 4.1 itself was pushed aside in 2020 by the Bali Catspace and then the Bali 4.2 relaunch in 2021. Around 150 hulls were delivered during its production run.
Naval architecture is by Xavier Faÿ, with the concept credited to Olivier Poncin and Yann Chabaud. The hull uses foam-cored, vacuum-infused GRP with PVC foam sandwich and polyester resin. No balsa core. The hulls are chined, which adds interior volume and improves stability at rest.
Bali marketed the 4.1 as the first sailing catamaran in its class to be completely bridged from bow to stern boards. The trampoline is gone. In its place sits a solid foredeck that creates the signature forward cockpit. Sailors have strong opinions about this, and we'll get to those below.
Key numbers: 6.72 m beam, 1.12 m draft with boards up, light displacement of 8.9 tonnes, and maximum loaded displacement of 11.8 tonnes. Twin 40 hp saildrives provide power. SAIL Magazine's 2019 test boat had Volvo Penta D2-40 units, though some charter operators list Yanmar 40 hp alternatives. No factory year-by-year switchover has been documented, so verify the engine make on any hull you're considering.
The sail plan delivers 105.40 sqm upwind: 50 sqm mainsail and 56 sqm genoa, giving a sail-area-to-displacement ratio of 25. A self-tacking headsail option exists but cuts upwind area and pointing ability further. The boat holds CE Category A certification for ocean passages with up to 10 persons.

Layout and living aboard
Cabin configurations
The 4.1 comes in three or four cabin layouts: a 4-cabin/4-head charter version, a 3-cabin/3-head layout, or a 3-cabin/2-head owner version. With saloon berths, total capacity reaches 10. The 4-cabin charter layout dominates the used market. If you want the 3-cabin owner version, you'll have fewer boats to choose from and will need to search harder for one.
The forward cockpit and ventilation
The solid foredeck creates a sheltered forward cockpit, separated from the saloon by a retractable bay window. In practice, you get two distinct outdoor living areas, forward and aft, connected by a single-level saloon.
That said, the hard foredeck has raised doubts among sailors accustomed to trampolines, as the Multihulls World review noted. There is no traditional foredeck access of the kind you'd find on a Lagoon or Fountaine Pajot. If sitting in a net with spray underneath matters to you, this is the wrong boat.
Tankage
Water capacity is 800 litres, enough for extended cruising without a watermaker if you're careful. Fuel sits at 400 litres across the twin tanks. Black water is 2 × 50 litres, adequate for coastal work but fills fast with a full charter load.

Off-the-wind sailing
The Bali 4.1 is a reaching and running machine. One owner reported 8 knots SOG plus tide on a broad reach with two reefs in 25 knots of wind. Under engine, SAIL Magazine recorded 6.5 knots at 2,000 rpm and over 8 knots at wide-open throttle (3,000 rpm) on flat water. For island-hopping in trade-wind belts or Mediterranean summer conditions, Force 3 to 5 from astern, the 4.1 does exactly what it's asked to do.
Charter work in the Adriatic, Ionian, or Caribbean is the design intent. If you're planning to base in Greece's popular cruising grounds from Alimos to Lefkada, the shallow 1.12 m draft and stable platform will serve you well in anchorages where deeper monohulls simply can't reach.
Motor-sailing
Upwind, motor-sailing is effectively mandatory. One charter owner noted that in 25 knots at 60° true wind angle without engines, the boat managed barely 4 knots SOG. Motor-sailing brought that to 50° and 7.5 knots. Accept this, and the boat becomes a very competent passage-maker on its engines.

Weak points and what they cost
Upwind ability
This is the single most-cited complaint. Chined hulls, moderate sail area with an SA/D of 25, and the optional self-tacking headsail combine to make the 4.1 a poor pointer. Buyers need to verify whether the fitted headsail is the full 56 sqm genoa or the smaller self-tacking solent. That difference matters significantly when you're trying to make ground into a Force 4.
Helm station water ingress
One owner reported: "Heavy rain cause water ingress through the steering station into the starboard aft cabin" (anonymous reviewer, NoShoes-Resoled.com, 2021-03-28). This hasn't been confirmed as a fleet-wide structural defect, but it comes up repeatedly. On any survey, check the helm station seals carefully and inspect the starboard aft cabin headliner for water staining. A reseal of the helm station is relatively inexpensive. The cost is diagnostic time, not materials.
Ex-charter condition
Dream Yacht Charter was the primary buyer of new Bali 4.1s. Most used examples on the market today are ex-charter boats with high engine hours, worn sails, and potentially deferred maintenance. One CruisersForum user (February 2020) reported difficulty getting Dream Yacht Charters to complete warranty repairs on a purchased boat. Budget for a full independent survey, and expect to replace standing rigging, sails, and running gear on any ex-charter hull.
Davit system
SAIL Magazine flagged the dinghy davit system on the aft platform as "a bit unusual" and a handling concern for new owners. It works, but spend time learning it before launching the tender in a crosswind.
LOA measurement confusion
The builder quotes 12.12 m hull length, but brokers consistently list 12.35 m when measuring to the end of the platform. This affects marina berth sizing (you may end up paying for a 13 m berth) and import documentation in some jurisdictions. Clarify which measurement applies before signing berth contracts.
How it ages
The PVC foam core with no balsa is a genuine advantage for longevity. There is no risk of the core rot that plagues many production catamarans of this era. Vacuum infusion means consistent laminate quality with lower void content than hand-layup construction. Structurally, the 4.1 should age well if maintained.
The weak links are the same as any high-use charter cat: sail wear, engine hours, and cosmetic deterioration of interior cabinetry and soft furnishings. A 2018 hull with six years of charter use may have 3,000 or more engine hours. Factor in impeller replacements, saildrive seal inspections, and potential injector servicing.
The solid foredeck eliminates trampoline replacement costs, a real saving over the boat's lifetime. The foredeck panels and window seals do require periodic inspection for UV degradation and potential leaks, particularly in tropical climates.

The mid-market cluster sits between €290,000 and €380,000, where you'll find 2018 to 2020 builds with varying charter histories. Below €275,000, expect high-hour ex-charter boats needing immediate sail and engine work. Above €400,000, you're looking at low-hour private examples or late 2019 to 2020 builds with upgrades.

The Bali 4.1 is a living platform that sails, not a sailing platform you can live on. That distinction is the entire buying decision.
