What you’d actually do with her
This is an aluminium ocean cruiser for long routes away from marinas. Typical use: a season of extended coastal and offshore passages, an Atlantic circuit, a year or several years of living aboard. With the centreboard raised she needs very little water: you can enter shallow bays, lagoons and rivers, and on a falling tide she settles upright on the bottom in places keelboats cannot go. The metal hull tolerates contact with rock and ice that would send a fibreglass boat to the repair yard. A couple can run her; with experience, one person. She sails calmly rather than fast, and relies on the engine in light wind. Racing and lively daysailing are not her genre: this is a boat for going far and staying out long.
The workhorse they named after a flying saucer
Some yards chase fashion. Alubat has spent fifty years ignoring it. Since 1973 the yard in Les Sables-d’Olonne has built the same idea over and over: a multi-chine aluminium hull, a centreboard that retracts completely, every kilo of ballast carried inside the hull. The boats are called OVNI, French for UFO (Objet Volant Non Identifié). The English-speaking world long ago found the truer name: the Land Rover of cruising boats.
The Ovni 435 is that idea at its commercial peak. Philippe Briand drew it, a man who won the Half Ton Cup and the One Ton Cup and designed the America’s Cup twelve-metre French Kiss. A racing architect produced a deliberately unhurried boat. The first hull went to a Japanese client at the end of 2000, and by the end of the run the order book stood at 115.
Nobody buys a 435 for speed. People buy it for permission: to cross an ocean, enter a river, dry out on the sand at low tide, touch an uncharted rock and carry on. Jimmy Cornell, with roughly 100,000 miles on aluminium centreboarders behind him, struck his Ovni on exactly such a rock in the Northwest Passage. The board swung up, as designed. The boat went on.
The yard that was rescued twice
Alubat’s history is a history of stubbornness. The yard was among the first in France to commit to aluminium and never stepped back from it, whatever happened to the market or to the company itself. And plenty happened. The 2008 crisis gutted the order book; in September 2013 the company entered receivership. In 2014 a group of fourteen Vendée businessmen bought the yard, which had once employed up to 120 people, for 150,000 euros, saving 25 of 65 jobs. In 2016 Christian Picard, formerly head of the aluminium-specialist brokerage AYC, took charge. And in October 2023 seven of the yard’s own employees, led by Luc Jurien, bought the company they work for.
For a used-boat buyer the practical point is simple: the entire 435 series (2000–2008) was built before the bankruptcy, in the era of long-time director Philippe Aupinel, and owners of that era describe the construction as bullet-proof. The quality dip the community talks about belongs to the underfunded years before the 2013 collapse, and to other models.
Ovni owners run their own forum-association, Ovni-Club, where for twenty years members have kept engineering threads on centreboard guide pads and cylinder electrolysis, complete with teardown photos and part numbers. When the hundredth 435 left the shed, the yard gathered its entire workforce around the boat and the owners’ family. The boat was named An Viroa, and she was pink from stem to stern.
What kind of boat is this, if you’re seeing her for the first time
The Ovni 435 is a 13.4-metre aluminium cruising yacht built around a crew of two. Three things separate her from anything in a charter catalogue.
She’s made of metal, without compromise. The hull is marine-grade 5083 aluminium welded over a dense matrix of frames and stringers. Alubat chose the material not for lightness but for survival: on impact, aluminium dents where fibreglass shatters. The price of that toughness is discipline. Aluminium does not tolerate stainless steel or copper against its skin, and most of the survey chapter below is, one way or another, about exactly that.
She has no keel at all. In its place: an aluminium centreboard plate that retracts fully into the hull, and 3.6 tonnes of lead laid inside the bilge. The board carries no ballast; its only job is windward grip. Draft is 2.54 metres with the board down and 0.74 with it up. Rivers, lagoons, drying harbours and sitting upright on the bottom are standard operating modes, not party tricks.
Hydraulics run her underwater life. Both the centreboard and the lifting rudder move on hydraulic cylinders driven by a hand pump. Touch the bottom and both blades kick up: the design assumes that meeting an uncharted rock should end in nothing. The flip side is the Ovni-specific Hydroem hydraulic gear, which has failure modes of its own; they get their own section in the survey chapter.
The series is large by the standards of the class: 115 hulls ordered over eight years. That is the 435’s trump card against Boréal and Garcia. These boats actually exist on the market.
Living with her: the people who’ve crossed oceans aboard
Nobody buys an Ovni 435 for its windward work, and honest owners don’t pretend otherwise. But the range of verdicts is remarkably wide, and it is the model’s great argument on the water.
“She is a stable and powerful boat, and very easy to handle. Like many centreboarders, upwind is not her favourite point of sailing, but if sailed a little free she’ll get on with it. Downwind, with the plate raised she is fast and stable and is the most controllable boat we’ve ever sailed.”
“Below 15 knots of wind you simply don’t move, unless you’re hard on the wind on the direct route. It is extremely frustrating.”
“I go to windward as well as a Sun Odyssey or a Bavaria, start beating from 5 knots of breeze and hold 9 downwind without a spinnaker or gennaker.”
Between the two poles sits a documented fact: on the passage from Saint Lucia to Martinique, a 435 lost twenty minutes to the smaller Ovni 36, sailed single-handed on older sails. The formula the French forum settles on: Ovnis are very comfortable boats at sea, but they do not surf.
Under power she makes 6.5 knots on about four litres an hour (Volvo D2-55). In marinas she demands attention. “OVNIs are not the easiest boats to handle in tight harbours, especially in cross winds,” says Speedie, who has no bow thruster and occasionally wishes he did.
The model’s ocean record is rich and, unusually, documented boat by boat. Jim Patek’s Let’s Go! logged 45,000 miles in seven years: New Zealand, Australia, Iceland, Shetland. Bajka (hull #99) sailed ARC 2017 and the barefoot route through Panama to New Zealand. Baluba, owned by a Norwegian syndicate with a circumnavigation plan, met forty-plus knots on the nose off Grenaa on her first stormy night: “the boat didn’t even flinch and made us all feel very safe.”
“My only serious complaint is that I am looking at a major cosmetic repair job related to stainless stanchions, grab rails, etc on an aluminium deck.”
Forty-five thousand miles, and the chief complaint is cosmetic. That is the portrait of the boat.
The stability debate: the boat with no keel and no published curve
Every aluminium centreboarder has this conversation eventually, but on the Ovni it runs sharpest of all. The 435’s board is an unballasted aluminium plate of roughly a hundred kilos; all the lead lies in the bilge. Righting moment therefore doesn’t depend on board position, but the centre of gravity sits higher than a keelboat’s. How much higher? Here the argument begins, because Alubat has never published an official stability curve for the 435.
“The stability value is 34.15, and the Angle of Vanishing Stability (AVS) is 126.57, within the boundaries deemed acceptable for ocean crossing. The capsize screening value is 1.84, anything less than 2 being considered good.”
“110 to 115, maybe 120 degrees for the Ovni 435/395,” and around 105 for the smaller 385. Numbers without method or source, but they have lived in the community for years.
The gap between 126 degrees and 110 is the gap between “a normal ocean boat” and “grounds for doubt.” The Yachting Monthly test of April 2008 put the situation most precisely; its verdict survives in a forum transcription, the original article being no longer accessible, which we record honestly. There will always be those who question whether a boat with an unballasted centreboard belongs on an ocean, and Alubat’s refusal to release the Gz curve feeds the argument; yet the boat carries an appropriate STIX number for CE Category A, and many hundreds of them have cruised the world without incident.
The honest takeaway for a buyer: Speedie’s calculation is the best available figure, and it was made from factory data rather than thin air. But it is an owner’s calculation, not a certificate. The full answer exists in exactly one form, the ISO stability booklet for a specific hull, which is worth requesting from Alubat REFIT or the certification body during purchase. And one more thing, often lost in this debate: centreboarder storm technique inverts the problem itself. Board up, the boat slides sideways down the face of a breaking wave instead of tripping over her own keel. Speedie rode out 48 hours of heavy weather off Cap Blanc that way, and a Norwegian owner of the smaller 385 confirms the same tactic in winter Norway. A boat without a keel holds a course worse, and survives a beam sea better.
Buying a used Ovni 435: problems and what to check

The centreboard trunk: the signature assembly
The plate rides on guide pads inside the trunk, and at around fifteen years the pads start to bind: corrosion powder mixed with silt builds up between pad and trunk wall, swells, and presses the pads against the plate. The cure is disassembly and cleaning; the prevention is opening the assembly every five years. Complete jamming of the board has happened. The plate itself and its pivot are close to indestructible, and the design never changed from hull #4 to the end of the series.
Lifting cable and tackle
The weak point is the stainless cable: strands break at the sheave, or the end fitting lets go. An owner of a 385 with 60,000 miles behind him caught both failures. Replacement is straightforward and possible even afloat. The rubber lips closing the bottom of the trunk wear out, and their shreds ride up and jam between trunk and plate. The tackle blocks are consumables; the sheaves and pins wear fast.
Hydroem hydraulics: look here first
The cylinders for board and rudder come from Hydroem, a specialist near La Rochelle, and they are pure Ovni: outside hydraulic shops won’t touch them, replacement is exchange-only and expensive (a control block alone runs over a thousand euros). The classic failure is electrolytic. Glycol leaks, eaten threads, pitted piston rods. One owner lost his rudder cylinder two years after launch because stray current found a path through it; the fix and the prevention is an aluminium bonding braid on the cylinder. At survey: traces of glycol, rod condition, presence of the braid, replacement history. The working fluid is automotive antifreeze, chosen because so many Ovnis head for polar water.
Internal ballast
The lead sits in the bilge, isolated from the hull by its bedding compound. Lead, aluminium and seawater make an aggressive triangle, so the state of that isolation is question number one below the floorboards. Moisture and active corrosion under the ballast are grounds to stop the deal pending a full inspection.
Stainless on deck
Stanchion bases, grab rails, fasteners: wherever stainless meets aluminium, paint eventually blisters and corrosion starts, Duralac paste notwithstanding. Patek, after 45,000 miles, calls this his only serious complaint. On late hulls Alubat began fitting plastic inserts into the stanchion bases, one more argument for 2006–2008 boats. The remedy is known: dismantle, clean up, reassemble on Tef-Gel.
Lewmar hatches
The forward Ocean-series units hold up. The small side hatches are the weak spot: handles glued to the lens that eventually come off (“and that’s them finished,” as Speedie puts it), and old seals that weep at the joint between the two halves of the frame. A sensible plan budgets for replacing the small hatches with Goiot or Gebo.
The fridge
A known series ailment: within about three years condensation soaks the insulation, rotting the joinery around it and warping the cabin sole. Check the sole near the galley; on the last hulls of the run this was probably corrected.
Stern gland and propeller
The standard Volvo seal needs burping after every drying-out; many owners have swapped it for a PSS. The cutless bearing is vulnerable to a wrapped line, and on Let’s Go! it was replaced twice.
Shore power
The main source of electrolysis on an aluminium boat is the marina. The factory leak meter must work, an isolation transformer should be fitted, and a careful owner’s log shows daily leak checks. One documented warning sign: anode consumption that accelerated sharply after an engine swap.
Tanks
The integral aluminium water tanks develop white oxide spots and pitting. Look inside during the survey.
Paint
The eternal aluminium question: the less of it, the better. Blisters at edges and around deck hardware are the normal signature of age, a bargaining lever rather than a verdict.
Ovni 435 price and market: the liveliest in the class
Against the Boréal 44, of which roughly one hull reaches the open market per year (see the Boréal 44 dossier), the 435’s market looks luxurious: eight to ten live listings at any moment, most of them on French platforms. Asking prices run from about 190,000 to 300,000 euros. The top of the range belongs to boats refitted by the yard itself under the Alubat REFIT program and to late, well-equipped hulls.
Firm prices on boats 18 to 25 years old are structure, not anomaly. Christian Picard, while running the yard, said it himself: the first competitor of a new Ovni is a used Ovni. Good late hulls (2006–2008, numbers roughly from 95 up) sell faster and dearer; they carry the plastic stanchion-base inserts and the run’s accumulated fixes.
The practical conclusion: unlike her scarce neighbours in the class, the 435 lets you choose. Compare hulls, bargain on paint and hydraulics, wait for the right specification. The biography of the individual boat decides more than the year on the transom.

Ovni 435 vs Garcia, Boréal and Allures, and against her own family
Boréal 44 is the next league in both price and execution: a glazed pilothouse, aft daggerboards, external lead in a shallow keel embryo. The community formula from YBW: Ovnis just look flimsier than a Boréal. The difference in perception costs roughly double the money, plus a year of hunting for a hull. Garcia Exploration 45 is Jimmy Cornell’s choice after his hundred thousand miles: ballast resin-sealed into welded bilge compartments, a foil-shaped board he credits with better windward bite than his old Ovni. The same arithmetic applies, though. Garcias barely exist second-hand. Ovnis do.
Allures 44 pairs an aluminium hull with a composite deck and puts her ballast in a lifting keel: lighter up top, more modern in feel, oriented toward warmer water.
Inside the family. The Ovni 43 (1991–2000) is the predecessor from the same Briand board: lighter, cheaper, 68 hulls. The Ovni 445 (2008–2017, Marc Lombard) is the successor and a genuinely different boat: longer on the waterline, with a half-tonne ballasted steel centreboard, distinctly better upwind, and 40 to 80 thousand euros dearer with 46 built. An owner who has sailed both puts it plainly: volume, load-carrying and a gentle motion, take the 435; windward performance, take the 445.
The choice formula the community has settled on: pure high latitudes with an open budget, Boréal; integrated comfort, Garcia; warm-water pace, Allures; a real-world budget, a living market and a departure date next month, Ovni.

The original Yachting Monthly test (April 2008) is inaccessible; its stability verdict is reproduced here from a forum transcription. No official Gz curve exists in public, and the stability booklet of a specific hull remains the only way to close that question with numbers.
