What you’d actually do with her

This is a 14-metre aluminum centreboarder with a raised saloon you can steer from, watching the horizon through 270 degrees of glass without opening a door. What you’d do: cross oceans as a couple, stand watch in the warm with a mug of tea, slip into lagoons drawing 1.14 metres, dry out on a falling tide, go where the ice is and not worry about the hull. What you wouldn’t do: win races, enjoy beating to windward in light air, or buy her cheap. In 2024 three of these boats transited the Northwest Passage in company — 3,600 miles with a single fuel stop. That is the answer to “what is she for.”

One disambiguation before anything else. The Exploration 45 (2014–) is the first model of the relaunched Garcia under Grand Large Yachting. She has nothing to do with the old custom Garcias — Passoa 47, Nouanni, Salt, the one-offs — an era that ended when the Garcia brothers left in 2006. And there is no “Exploration 45.2”: the in-production revision is called V2 and began quietly at hull 11, in late 2016.

The boat specified by the most experienced customer in the world

Most yachts begin life at a shipyard. This one began with a client. By 2013 Jimmy Cornell — the man whose World Cruising Routes sits on the chart table of half the circumnavigators afloat — had logged some 200,000 miles and three laps of the planet. His fourth Aventura wasn’t chosen from a catalogue; it was dictated.

“My requirements were for a strong, fast, comfortable, functional and easily-handled boat, perfectly suited for both high latitude and tropical sailing. Many of the best features in my previous boat were to be incorporated into the new one: an unpainted aluminium hull, centreplate, shallow-draught, cutter rig.”

The design went to Berret-Racoupeau; the build to Garcia in Cherbourg. The client’s central heresy was a deck saloon on an integral centreboarder:

“A deck saloon was something that had never been attempted on a yacht with an integral centreplate, primarily because the added height may affect its stability. By settling for a low profile, the designer produced what I believe to be the perfect solution: a comfortable deck saloon with 270º visibility and an inside navigation/steering position without compromising either the stability or the looks.”

He put it more simply elsewhere: he wanted to transplant to a monohull the near all-round visibility that had seduced him on a catamaran.

Into the specification went everything 200,000 miles teaches: collision bulkheads fore and aft; a classic propeller shaft — he refused a saildrive outright on a boat like this; two fully autonomous autopilots; a gravity-fed 40-litre day tank; windlass and chain locker at the mast foot to keep the bows light; no diesel generator.

The yard itself is a story with a happy ending. Founded in 1974 by brothers Jean-Louis and Jean-Pierre Garcia, it built some 300 hulls that cruise from the Arctic to the Antarctic — cult custom aluminum boats. The brothers left in 2006; in 2010 Garcia joined the Grand Large Yachting group (Allures, Outremer, later RM and Gunboat) and was relaunched. The Exploration 45 became the first series model of the new era: the hull is shared with the Allures 45, but the deck and coachroof are all-aluminum where Allures uses composite — and the price of that is weight. 14.1 tonnes against the Allures’ 11.8. That difference will shape the boat’s character in everything that follows.

Hull number one — Aventura IV — launched in 2014. By August 2025 hull 51 (Brazuca) was in the water; the yard says “nearly 60.”

What kind of boat is this — if you’re seeing her for the first time

Three things separate the Exploration 45 from anything in a charter marina.

A saloon you can steer from. Not a sprayhood, not a hard dodger — a full inside navigation and steering station with 270-degree glazing, a plotter and a settee. An Arctic watch here looks like this: freezing on deck, hot-water radiators fed by a diesel boiler below, and the horizon in view without opening the door. It is the boat’s headline argument — and its central controversy, which we’ll come to.

A centreboard — and four and a half tonnes of lead in the bilge. The board itself carries no ballast: all the lead (4,540 kg by the yard’s figure) is cast into the hull and skeg. Draft is 1.14 m board up, 2.90 m down. She takes the ground upright on twin rudders, each on a protective skeg with a sacrificial composite crumple zone in the upper blade — the designer decided in advance that a rudder will meet a rock someday.

All-aluminum hull and deck. 5083 alloy: 10 mm bottom plating, 8 mm at the waterline, 6 mm topsides, up to 16 mm at the transom. Insulation is 74 mm of polyethylene foam on the hull and 37 mm under the deck (the “80 mm” in some brochures is marketing rounding). This is a boat for which ice contact is a design case, not an accident: Voyager’s owner hauled out in Kodiak after the 2024 Northwest Passage expecting scratches and dents — and found none.

The V2 revision, from hull 11 (late 2016): a widened saloon, a larger sail-locker hatch, more galley counter, better engine access, and windows cut into the hard dodger for sightlines from the wheel. Read that list backwards and you have a free map of the first ten hulls’ weak points.

Living with her: heavy, warm, slow in a drift

Nobody calls this boat exciting. Graham Snook in Yachting Monthly defined the genre:

“I pity any wave that gets in the way of the Garcia Exploration 45’s rounded aluminium hull. She’s big and heavy, and not the most exciting boat to sail... Like most centreboard yachts her windward performance suffers as a result of lack of weight low down in the water. The payback is her go-anywhere ability and her downwind performance. With the wind anywhere aft of the beam you can start lifting the centreboard.”

The owner consensus on the French forums is blunter still:

“An excellent boat for long-distance cruising. Under sail, excellent from 15 knots of wind; below that, a heavy boat, not very lively. On habitability: not that much room in the end, because of the quality — and therefore thick — insulation.”

Off the wind, though, she surprises. Pete Goss (hull 17, Pearl of Penzance, some 17,000 miles two-handed with his wife Tracey) holds the class speed record — 18.6 knots on a surf — and coined the line every review has borrowed since: a Land Rover of the sea with a BMW interior. A delivery of Arctic Monkey from Maine to Maryland averaged over 7 knots across 530 miles, surfing at 10–13 knots in 30-plus. The yard promises daily runs beyond 160 miles; the owner blogs tend to confirm rather than contradict.

Upwind: Charles Doane (SAIL, 2015) logged better than 6 knots at 40 degrees apparent in 20 knots of breeze and chop — respectable. But light-air windward work is the soft spot, and everyone including the owners admits it.

Daily life: double-glazed saloon windows, forced mechanical ventilation, closable dorades, hydronic heating with radiators in every cabin. One detail worth knowing for cold water: the hull ports and hatches are not double-glazed, unlike the saloon windows — condensation will collect exactly there.

The great debate: Garcia versus Boréal, with spreaders as the front line

In 2019 John Harries of Attainable Adventure Cruising did something nobody had done before: a five-part head-to-head of the Exploration 45 against the Boréal 47. It remains the most substantive public examination of the boat, and it is not comfortable reading for Cherbourg.

On sailing performance Harries’ verdict is flat: “I can confirm that the Boreal is way faster up wind in light air.” Reader Bill Attwood closed out the series with a question: “I’ve enjoyed all 3 articles, and am left wondering why anyone would choose the Garcia over the Boreal.”

The market’s answer: because they are different propositions. The Boréal is a sailing instrument with a watch kept outside-but-under-cover; the Garcia is an integrated living environment from which you observe the ocean out of the lounge. The bill for that arrives as weight, price, and light-air speed.

The second front line is the swept-back spreaders. Skip Novak in Yachting World — four Whitbread circumnavigations behind the opinion:

“Radically swept-back spreaders are now a feature of most modern rigs, but I would not advocate this configuration for a world cruiser. You will quickly find out why when having to reef downwind... The mainsail will be plastered against a very sticky, irregular surface and will be a mission to lower away, not to mention leading to continuous chafe issues when underway downwind.”

AAC reader Terence Thatcher went further: “the Garcia’s spreader design would prevent my purchase of a Garcia even were I tempted.” The same bafflement runs through Hisse-et-Oh: “Strange, all the same, to have swept-back spreaders on a cruising boat” (lolapo, 2020, translated from French). A mitigation case exists — a 15-degree sweep is manageable with vang tension and chafe patches, per SAIL’s reefing-downwind analysis — but the fact stands: the principal rival, Boréal, carries flat spreaders, and Boréal owners name that as one of their decisive advantages.

The third strand is stability. Published: STIX 37.5, CE Category A, ballast ratio 31–32%. The yard publishes no righting-arm curve and no AVS — nor, to be fair, does Boréal. The “big deck saloon adds buoyancy when inverted” argument exists only at forum level (Sailing Anarchy: it’s how SAR self-righting lifeboats do it), where the same thread honestly notes that many French centreboarders carry lower calculated AVS than keelboats — “but for the enormous mileage these boats have accumulated, there aren’t many capsizes.” No documented capsize or knockdown of an Exploration 45 at sea could be found. The buyer’s remedy is the same one this site gave for the Boréal: request the ISO 12217-2 stability booklet from the yard during purchase.

The aluminum basics — as on any boat of this metal

Galvanic couples (any stainless or bronze in hull contact below the waterline is an alarm), ultrasonic thickness readings at 30–40 points, a hull-potential survey with a reference electrode. One item specific to the Grand Large family: on a sister Allures, factory anodes were found mounted on rubber isolation gaskets. John Harries’ reaction: “Yikes, by isolating the anodes someone at Allures has made a very bad mistake. And the fact that they are not eroding is not good news, in fact probably the opposite. For anodes to protect the hull they must be electrically connected to the hull with no resistance.” Verifying anode-to-hull bonding goes into the surveyor’s brief as its own line.

Engine and driveline — the best-documented case on the boat

Early hulls (2014–2016) carry the Volvo Penta D2-55; from around 2016–2017 the D2-75 became standard. The Australian-owned Snow Gum (built ~2020) suffered a sheared shaft coupling in her first year, and Volvo needed three engine lift-outs to resolve it. That is the only fully documented primary failure; the phrase “several owners have reported infant mortality of gearboxes” circulates from a single low-quality aggregator and could not be verified against any primary source. The practical takeaway: pull the complete coupling and gearbox service history, and ask the owner directly whether the coupling has ever been replaced. Note that Nusquama (hull 33, 2022) received a brand-new D2-75 in 2025 — a history worth understanding if that boat interests you.

Hatches and instruments

A “leaking hatches” reputation exists on the Allures-Garcia owners’ forum, but on inspection it attaches almost entirely to Allures, with their aluminum-to-composite deck joint; the Garcia’s deck is welded aluminum throughout. Even so, a pressure test of the technical room and a check of every hatch and instrument seal belongs on the list: even cautious sources concede “minor water ingress through deck hatches or instrument seals” on some early hulls.

Centreboard and trunk

The board is unballasted, lifted by a single line to a winch, and the trunk carries an inspection port. There is no published fleet data on line replacement intervals, trunk corrosion, or board noise in a seaway — which makes this an open survey item, not a reason for comfort. Inspect the trunk through the port and the lifting line’s condition without fail.

V1 or V2

Hulls 1–10 (2014–2016): narrower saloon, smaller sail-locker hatch, tighter galley, worse engine access, no dodger windows. None of it is a defect — it’s a generation gap, and a bargaining lever if a V1 is priced as a V2.

Engine ergonomics

The engine lives under the saloon sole. One AAC commenter: imagine “trying to sort out a fuel problem or changing an impeller head down tail up in a seaway.” Check the access personally — V2 improved it, but it is still no engine room.

Price and market: €453,000 on paper, a million in real life

The Exploration 45’s market is thin but alive — livelier than the Boréal’s: there are almost always boats for sale, three to five listings worldwide.

Fresh data points (August 2026): Brazuca (hull 51, 2025, the first Garcia hull built on 24V DC) at $1.2M ex-VAT with Berthon; Moonlight Shadow (2025, Sweden) at €1,095,000 with transferable French leasing; Tobatoo (hull 41, 2023, ~300 engine hours) around €920–950k; Nusquama (hull 33, 2022) under offer at De Valk. A completed sale: Wings of Desire (hull 24, 2019, barely used) went for $875,000 through Swiftsure.

The new-boat price ladder explains the used market. Base price ex-Cherbourg is €453,000 ex-VAT — but that is a bare hull with an engine: no electronics, no watermaker, no lithium bank, no heating, no passage sails, no safety kit. A genuinely equipped new boat runs €1.0–1.1M plus the yard’s queue. Hence the phenomenon: a five-year-old boat with a full ocean inventory trades at 80–90% of the paper price of a new one — because the paper version of a new one doesn’t exist.

Check VAT status separately: a visible share of the fleet sails on French leasing schemes.

Garcia 45 vs Boréal, Allures and Ovni: what buyers actually compare

Boréal 44/44.2 — the principal rival, dissected above and in our Boréal 44 dossier. The community’s formula: Boréal is the purer sailing tool (flat spreaders, lighter, a better ballast ratio in the first series); Garcia is maximum integrated comfort with everything inside. Both are proven high-latitude boats; the choice is philosophy, not quality.

Allures 45.9 — the same hull from the same group, but with a composite deck: two tonnes lighter, livelier, and without the all-metal invulnerability. Her orientation is tradewinds and warm water.

K&M / Bestevaer — the Dutch school: more custom, more expensive, further from series production. Cited by buyers genuinely comparing million-plus budgets; as one YBW poster put it, the Garcia is “very nicely built, but personally the layout didn’t do it for me and the price point put it well into (or beyond) the territory of other boats (K&M, Boreal, Alubat, etc).”

Open questions

The exact hull and year of the D2-55 to D2-75 changeover is undocumented (the bracket is 2016–2017). The end of the Snow Gum saga — warranty outcome, a revised coupling, a gearbox replacement — is unconfirmed. There is no owner data on centreboard line life or trunk condition across the fleet. No AVS or righting curve has been published. Ballast: 4,540 kg (yard) versus 4,300 kg (early press) versus 4,100 kg (one De Valk listing) — unresolved. Aventura IV’s fate after her 2017 sale: Cornell speaks of a buyer with Arctic plans, and the boat reached Antarctica in 2024; her current name and port are unknown. First-hand accounts of the boat in the tropics — deck-saloon heat, air-conditioning retrofits — could not be found; the question has been asked publicly and no owner has answered it. How much does a used Garcia Exploration 45 cost?

August 2026 anchors: $875,000 — an actual sale of a nearly unused 2019 boat; €920–950k asked for a 2023 hull; €1.0–1.2M for 2025 boats. This model’s market has yet to see anything below €700,000.

What are the known problems of the Exploration 45?

The general aluminum checklist (galvanic corrosion; verify anodes are bonded to the hull, not isolated), one documented first-year Volvo D2-75 coupling shear (Snow Gum), reports of minor hatch and instrument-seal leaks on early hulls of the group (mostly the sister brand Allures), and the tighter V1 interior on hulls before No. 11.

Garcia Exploration 45 or Boréal 44?

Garcia is “everything inside”: deck saloon, interior steering station, maximum integrated comfort — heavier and slower in light air. Boréal is the sailing instrument: flat spreaders, lighter, faster upwind, with the watch kept in a doghouse rather than a lounge. Both are established high-latitude boats.

Is she suitable for the tropics?

By design, yes — insulation works both ways, and the coachroof overhangs the glazing against the sun — but no first-hand owner account from hot climates exists in open sources, and air conditioning is not standard. The honest answer: the question is open.
