Some boats get designed. Others survive onto paper, because they survived in real life first. The Boréal 44 is the second kind.
Picture a man who sold a thriving carpentry business, built a 12-metre yacht at the bottom of his own garden, and sailed away for six years with his wife and four children. The last two of those years he spent in the channels of Patagonia. Williwaws drop off the glaciers there without warning, you run anchor lines to the rocks, and the nearest marina is weeks away. He came home and spent the next twenty years answering a single question: what should that boat have been?
The Boréal 44 is his answer. That’s why it has a proper watertight door on the pilothouse, so you can stand watch in the warm, scanning the horizon through double glazing. That’s why it dries out upright in any bay in the world. That’s why there is one rudder, tucked behind the keel, instead of two exposed blades. Nothing on this boat was invented for a boat show. All of it comes from somewhere in those two years.
If your plan involves high latitudes, autonomy, and a boat that is a home for serious water, very little competes with a Boréal 44 at this money. If your plan is the Mediterranean and marinas, you’ll be paying for tools you won’t use, and sweating in a boat conceived for the cold. It is not a boat for everything. That’s precisely what’s honest about it.

The man behind the drawings
Jean-François Delvoye is a Belgian from Liège, and nothing about his path resembles a naval architect’s CV. A physiotherapy degree and three years of practice, then he walked away: it wasn’t his life. Ten years building up his own carpentry firm, machine by machine. In 1997 he sold it and went to sea for six years. He taught himself to weld. He became a yacht designer without a single day of formal training.
The Boréal yard appeared in 2005 in Tréguier, Brittany, “somewhat by accident,” around the build of a 50-footer that sold two hulls before the prototype ever touched water. And the first Boréal 44 was built for a man Delvoye had met on a pontoon in Ushuaia, at the literal end of the world: the second Jean-François, Eeman. Friend became client, client became partner for the next fifteen years. Their shared boat, Juan sa Bulan 3, still serves the yard as demonstrator and test mule.
Today Boréal is sixty people, ten boats a year, and an order book that runs two to three years deep. Since 2020 the yard has a new president, Éric Vautrin, but Delvoye remains managing director and chief designer; his son Simon is a hydrodynamicist on the design team. Building boats one at a time isn’t a pose here. It’s the ceiling the philosophy imposes.
Leaving for the day, the owners left their guest a note about their new Citroën: “The key’s on the front wheel. Help yourself.”
Eeman himself once went silent on a journalist for a month, mid-correspondence. He’d gone to Antarctica.
What kind of boat is this — if you’re seeing her for the first time
The Boréal 44 is a 13.8-metre aluminum sailing yacht built around a crew of two, or a family. Three things separate her from anything in a charter catalogue.
She’s made of metal. The hull is marine-grade aluminum, the same family of material as the workboats of the North. Aluminum shrugs off the rock and ice contact that sends fiberglass boats to the yard. The price of that toughness is a set of rules: aluminum does not forgive contact with stainless steel or copper. More on that in the buying section. It matters more than anything else on a survey.
She has no conventional keel. Instead: a lifting centreboard and a flat ballasted “keel embryo” under the hull, cast with nearly four tonnes of lead. Board up, she draws one metre: you can slip into a lagoon or a river mouth, take the ground on a falling tide, and she sits upright on her skid, flat and stable. Board down, she draws two and a half metres and goes to windward like a proper yacht. For long-range cruising this is a freedom keelboats simply don’t have.
She has a pilothouse with a real door. Not a sprayhood or a hard dodger, but a 360-degree glazed watchkeeping station with a watertight door, from which you can run the boat without going out into the weather. Inside: a diesel drip stove and hot-water radiators. A Boréal crew off Iceland stands watch in a jumper, mug of tea in hand. That, more than anything, is why people buy these boats.
There aren’t many of them: 65 hulls in the first decade, counting the bigger sister 47. Two generations exist: the original 44 (2010–2019) and the reworked 44.2 (2020 onward), which gained taller topsides, more headroom and cockpit-led reefing, and put on three tonnes in the process. That difference matters to a buyer, and we’ll take it apart below.
Living with her: the people who’ve crossed oceans aboard
The Boréal 44 is not a racing boat and never pretends to be. Hard on the wind she’ll hold 6–6.5 knots at 55 degrees true; pinch higher and the speed drains away fast. Her element is anything freer than a beam reach: testing the sister-ship 47.2, Yachting World logged 8.7 knots at 145 degrees true, and owners talk about 200-mile days without drama.
“The Boréal has more potential than we utilize. Other owners have sailed 200+ mile days and I don’t doubt it.”
Same owner, on daily life: “The windows are double pane, so they’re pretty much always condensation-free. And the Refleks heater is a profoundly wonderful and simple thing — we can dry out five sets of wet slickers in an evening.” With one honest caveat: “In gusty winds it can be hard to light.”
The steering takes getting used to. Instead of a deep racing spade there’s a protected blade behind the keel, backed up by a pair of composite daggerboards aft.
“Sailing on the wind you play the leeward board and can dial in just as much lee or weather helm as you want. But the steering was not as precise and responsive as on a typical modern boat with a high-aspect spade rudder — I had a tendency to oversteer at first.”
Why one rudder when the whole industry has gone to two? Delvoye has a personal answer: he once lost a rudder on a twin-rudder boat. Since then, one blade only, and only protected.
The Boréal storm technique has become class folklore: lift the centreboard entirely, and the boat slides sideways down the face of a breaking wave instead of tripping over her keel. The yard doesn’t shy from demonstrations. Belgian journalists were taken out of Tréguier in gusts to 54 knots.
Reefing on the first generation happens at the mast, and it splits the community cleanly in two:
Tellingly, the yard led the first two reefs back to a central powered winch on the second generation, conceding half the argument.
The stability debate: the designer steps into the ring
In January 2022 something happened that almost never happens in yachting: the designer showed up in a critic’s blog to argue, in public, under his own name. The thread drew millions of views and remains the most substantive public examination of the boat.
The charge: the blog Interesting Sailboats worked through the new 44.2 and landed on an uncomfortable number. The ballast-to-displacement ratio had fallen from 36% on the original to 28.7% on the second generation. The same 3.8 tonnes of lead now carries three tonnes more boat.
The honest takeaway for a buyer: the drop in ballast ratio is a fact the designer doesn’t deny. He answers it with hull form and a low, dense center of gravity. The precise angle of vanishing stability has never been published for either generation; the only way to close the question with numbers is to request the ISO 12217-2 stability booklet from the yard during purchase. And the original 44 stands apart in this whole argument: its 36% ballast ratio is among the best of any aluminum centreboarder, better than the Ovni 450 (32%) and the Garcia Exploration 45 (roughly 31%).
Buying a used Boréal 44: problems and what to check

Foreign metal in the hull: enemy number one
A stainless-on-aluminum galvanic couple in seawater eats aluminum at a frightening rate.
An owner discovered three stainless screws a previous owner had driven into the hull to mount a bilge pump: “A month went by and one of the three holes is now close to 1 cm across, and it’s digging deeper. Luckily it landed on the thickness of the centreboard trunk… otherwise I think I’d be under water.”
The fix, from the same thread: isolating paste (Tef-Gel or Tikal), and “an aluminum welder will fill it in an hour’s work.”
Tell your surveyor to hunt for any non-factory fastener: screws under pumps, brackets, transducers, anything a previous owner attached “just for a minute.”
Paint
Boréal paints its hulls end to end, and this is the aluminum world’s eternal argument.
The practical read: paint condition is the single most visible marker of a hull’s age, and your main bargaining lever. Blisters at edges, around deck hardware, and above all at the chainplates justify a discount, but with proper repair they’re not a death sentence.
Centreboard and trunk
Inspect the welds inside the trunk. Check for play in the board’s guides; wear announces itself as a clanking sound in a seaway. The lifting cable is a consumable: ask when it was last replaced. The board itself is a hollow aluminum NACA foil and is sacrificial by design: in a hard grounding it takes the hit, not the hull. The aft daggerboards are composite fuses built to snap and save the boat; repair marks on them aren’t a crime, they’re biography.
Ballast and bottom
The lead in the keel embryo must be isolated from the aluminum: if the plating is ever breached, the lead–seawater–aluminum combination is aggressive to the hull. Early boats carry batteries inside the embryo; check that space for moisture and terminal corrosion. Good practice on any aluminum hull: ultrasonic thickness readings at 30–40 points. Electrolysis eats plating silently.
Stove and gases
The Refleks is wonderful and simple, but put the flue on your checklist and a CO detector on your must-fit list. The community has had serious debates about carbon monoxide on drip-stove boats, and the learning curve is steeper than it looks.
Interior and systems: know before you step aboard
First-generation weaknesses, owner-confirmed: headroom that has a 1.85 m person standing straight only under the hatches; veneer that peels at edges and corners (“I’m constantly gluing it back down,” says a 47 owner after 23,000 miles); access to some systems only by dismantling furniture (“one day a small galley pump meant taking apart half the joinery,” an owner reports on Hisse-et-Oh). This is the cost of a compact expedition layout, better known in advance than discovered afloat.

Everything Boréal changed on the 44.2 (taller headroom, cockpit reefing, a backrest in the doghouse, a bigger fridge, a separate shower) reads as a list of the first owners’ complaints. When you survey a Series I boat, that list is your inspection program.
Boréal 44 price and market: the boat that isn’t for sale
The used market for the Boréal 44 is vanishingly thin. As this dossier went to press, exactly one boat was listed globally; the French Argus showed zero.
“There are very, very few Boréals on the used market. Our owners keep their boats a long while. We have a list of people who say: give me a ring when a Boréal comes up for sale.”
Price anchors: 2010–2016 hulls have sold and been offered between €430,000 and €500,000; recent 47s reach a million dollars. A new 44 cost €417,500 in 2010 and runs to roughly €750–830k ex-VAT today. In the yard’s own words, used Boréals “resell at the price of a new one.” The economics of scarcity work for the owner: a two-to-three-year queue for a new build props up every used hull’s price.
The practical conclusion: you don’t find a Boréal 44 in the listings — you wait for one. Good examples change hands before any public ad, through the yard’s own list and the owners’ grapevine. Understanding the boat before the deal is the only edge a buyer can secure in advance.

Boréal 44 vs Garcia, Ovni and Allures: what buyers actually compare
Garcia Exploration 45 is the principal rival, and the boat Jimmy Cornell chose for his fourth Aventura. Heavier, beamier, with an everything-inside interior. The key technical divide is the spreaders:
“Flat spreaders versus swept-back spreaders — this is one of the big advantages of the Boréal over the Garcia. With swept-back spreaders it is much harder to reef the main sailing off the wind, something I think you must be able to do.”
Garcia is more comfort-submarine; Boréal is more sailing instrument. Though the water doesn’t always side with Brittany: off the Hebrides, a Garcia Passoa 47 held a course “a few degrees higher and a knot faster” than a Boréal 47 for several hours upwind. One report, but firsthand.
Alubat Ovni 450 is the people’s aluminum centreboarder: more of them, cheaper, a huge community.
“I would not call the Ovni flimsy — they just LOOK flimsier than a Boréal. After all, Jimmy Cornell ordered a Garcia, not another Ovni.”
Less polish, simpler execution, a lower cost of entry, and the fattest used market in the class.
Allures 45.9 pairs an aluminum hull with a composite deck: the lightest of this company with the highest ballast ratio (37.9%), the most athletic on paper. But the wide stern, twin exposed rudders and a vast cockpit give away her orientation: tradewinds and warm water. Same metal, different philosophy.
The formula the community has settled on: pure high latitudes, Boréal; maximum integrated comfort, Garcia; budget and go-anywhere value, Ovni; warm-water miles and pace, Allures.

Open questions
This dossier doesn’t pretend to omniscience. The precise angle of vanishing stability has never been published for either generation; until a stability booklet surfaces, the 44.2 debate stays open on the numbers. Wear in the centreboard guides is reported secondhand and awaits owner confirmation. And real day’s-run figures for the 44 specifically (not the 47) belong to the people who’ve sailed her across oceans. Their answers will appear in the next revision.

How much does a used Boréal 44 cost?
Between roughly €430,000 and €500,000 for 2010–2016 hulls, when one appears at all. Often only one or two are listed worldwide at any moment, and good boats frequently sell through the yard’s waiting list before reaching public listings.
What are the known problems of the Boréal 44?
The recurring themes are aluminum-specific: galvanic corrosion wherever stainless fasteners contact the hull, paint blistering with age (especially at chainplates), centreboard guide wear, plus first-generation interior gripes such as limited headroom, peeling veneer edges and awkward access to some systems.
