What you’d actually do with her
You’d live aboard and cross oceans while barely leaving the shelter of a rigid doghouse. In the morning, one button rolls the mainsail out of the mast; another unfurls the genoa. You stand watch — or rather, sit it — behind a windscreen with a coffee, dry in any weather. In the evening there’s a washing machine, air conditioning, a watermaker, and on later hulls an induction galley with no gas aboard at all. This is the boat on which a couple in their sixties goes around the world without hiring crew, and that is exactly how the fleet is used: the owners of Gaïa took theirs from Greenland to the Chilean fjords and on to Polynesia; the owners of Rainbow ordered one after sailing halfway around the world on an Amel 55.
What you won’t do is steer for pleasure. The push-pull cable linkage to the twin rudders sends nothing back through the wheel. And you won’t economise: entry starts around €850,000, and every one of a dozen onboard systems will want servicing one day.
The first sloop in twenty years
At the Cannes show in September 2017, the Amel yard unveiled a boat with no mizzen — its first since 1997. For a brand whose name had been synonymous with the centre-cockpit ketch, this looked close to apostasy. Henri Amel’s ketches — the Maramu, the Super Maramu, the 54 — were not so much yachts as “integrated cruising systems”: everything electric, everything proprietary, everything workable by a couple from a protected cockpit.
The 50 was drawn by the Berret-Racoupeau office, also of La Rochelle: Olivier Racoupeau on hull and deck, Isabelle Racoupeau on the interior. Racoupeau explained the break with tradition without sentiment: motorised furlers had made a 50-foot sloop so easy to handle that, in his words from the launch interviews of April 2017, “ketch rigging is no longer necessary on a boat of this size.”
What the yard kept from Amel’s system: the deep central cockpit under a rigid coachroof, electric in-mast mainsail and genoa furling, all controls centralised at the helm seat, watertight bulkheads, a sealed engine room amidships, and the moulded gelcoat “teak” deck — not a screw in it, not a bead of caulk to fail. What it gave up: the second mast with its built-in redundancy, and — in the critics’ reading — part of the ballast margin of the old boats’ seaworthiness. That argument runs through this whole dossier.
The reception was a triumph: European Yacht of the Year 2018 in the Luxury Cruiser class, SAIL’s Best Monohull Cruising Boat 41–50ft for 2020, and warm words from Germany’s YACHT about a synthesis of solidity and sophistication. By 2026 roughly 140 hulls are sailing, the yard builds about fifteen boats a year, and the waiting list for a new one runs to years. In September 2026 the successor, the Amel 50.2, debuts at Cannes at €1,150,000 ex-VAT.
What kind of boat is this — if you’re seeing her for the first time
The Amel 50 is a 15.5-metre GRP ocean sloop (16.5 m with the bowsprit), built around one idea: two people who are no longer young should be able to cross oceans without physical strain. Three things separate her from a charter catalogue.
A pilothouse where a cockpit would be. The helmsman sits amidships behind a windscreen — tempered glass with wipers from hull #74, Plexiglas before that — under a rigid hardtop. Every manoeuvre happens by button from that seat: in-mast main, genoa, electric sheet winches. Yachting World noted that the cable steering never loads up, so no feel reaches the wheel — the price of the layout, not a defect.
Systems as philosophy. An 8 kW generator, a Dessalator watermaker, air conditioning, heating, a washer-dryer, electric davits — in the Amel genre these are not options but the baseline. From hull #74 (2023, the “Evolution” series) the yard went further: no gas aboard, an induction-and-electric galley, Mastervolt lithium at 800 Ah, and a 150 hp engine in place of 110.
A hull more conservative than the silhouette. Vacuum infusion, solid laminate below the waterline, sandwich above; bulkheads laminated to hull and deck. The ballast is 5.36 tonnes of cast iron, bolted to a keel stub and sealed in epoxy. Iron, not lead, and not encapsulated — we’ll come back to that in both the debate and the surveyor’s checklist. Living with her: the people who’ve crossed oceans aboard
The long-term testimony is unusually unanimous on the main point: the boat does exactly what it promises.
“The boat is safe, a good performer, and the comfort is remarkable.”
Their route: La Rochelle to Scotland, the Faroes, Iceland, Greenland, Brazil, Patagonia and across the Pacific — about five years aboard. They chose the Amel over their previous Wauquiez as the boat better suited to their age, with a sheltered cockpit, for high latitudes. Telling, too, is how the voyage ended in 2025: not with the boat but with health — eyesight and urology. Gaïa sold through a Tahiti brokerage at $950,000.
“I didn’t expect to feel connected to the sailing experience”
— and yet, across a full range of conditions, she was; her honest caveat was that the seated helm position and the jib pole may defeat smaller crew.
The test numbers: 8.1–8.4 knots upwind in 18–20 knots true; 4.4 knots in a mere 5 knots of breeze — rare agility for a heavy cruiser; up to 9.2 knots off the wind with downwind sails set. Pointing angles, per the testers, are acceptable for ocean passagemaking rather than impressive.
And the counterpoint that cannot be cut:
“more of a motorsailer than a traditional cruising sailboat” — and, separately, that iron rather than lead ballast costs righting moment and upwind ability.
The Amel fleet’s traditional answer is a shrug: nobody bought her for the helm.
The great debate: a lost mast — crew error, or a bill for the yard
In April 2022 an Amel 50 lost its mast between islands in French Polynesia, in about 15 knots of wind. Not a storm, not a knockdown: a wrap. The halyard of the light-wind sail — the factory code zero/gennaker on the standard bowsprit — caught the genoa furler; the wrap cinched around the forestay and untwisted the wire at its fitting. The boat was sailing in the Grand Large rally; the yard had recently featured the family, children aboard, on its own social media.
What follows is the part that matters to a buyer. In the owners’ group thread (main@AmelYachtOwners.groups.io, “Amel lost its mast – D1?”, 28 April 2022), Amel 50 owner Justin Maguire wrote that he was “one of at least five 50’s that I know of that damaged their forestay” — the common thread being a light-wind halyard stowed wrongly or left slack — and separately regretted that his owner’s manual carried no explicit warning about it.
Another participant pushed the arithmetic to its conclusion: five of an estimated forty sister ships is twelve percent — in his words, “higher than should be accepted as ‘user error’ and demands a fix.”
The counter-argument came from inside the fleet too. Matt Salatino relayed the investigation’s finding — a halyard wrap on the genoa furler, a known failure mode on any boat with a powered furler — and a veteran Amel ketch owner described the simple discipline that prevents it: both light-sail halyards led over the spreader and secured aft of the mast, well clear of the forestay.
What could not be found anywhere: an Amel service bulletin, a halyard deflector, a revised bowsprit lead. The Evolution change list for hull #74 onward — bigger engine, glass windscreen, lithium, Coppercoat — contains nothing on halyard wrap, and the new Selden-built mast is declared functionally identical. As far as the public record shows, the yard’s answer stayed procedural: stow the halyard correctly, keep it tensioned.
The honest takeaway for a buyer: the failure mechanism is understood and the prevention is trivial, but the history of the specific hull is a mandatory question in any deal. The “twelve percent” figure is one owner’s forum estimate, not a yard statistic — which is exactly why the surveyor’s question is not “does the model have this problem” but “did this boat ever have a wrap.”
Buying a used Amel 50: problems and what to check

Rig and bowsprit — the gating item
A rigger’s inspection of the forestay is not optional. Look for signs of strand untwisting at the upper terminal; ask directly whether there has ever been a halyard wrap, whether the forestay has been replaced, and for the paperwork. Check how this particular boat stows its code zero/gennaker halyards. An undocumented rig history is grounds for a hard renegotiation or a walk.
Steering
Push-pull cables run to the port rudder quadrant — think engine controls, scaled up. Zero feedback is the design, not a fault. Faults are play, binding, and corrosion traces on the cable jackets. There is precedent for early adjustment: Gaïa’s very first passage in 2020 was cut short by a steering-cable problem. No pattern of fleet-wide steering failures appears in open sources — but the fleet is young.
Ballast
Cast iron bolted to a stub, epoxy barrier outside. Hunt for rust weeps along the keel joint and for any evidence of grounding: a breached barrier on iron does not forgive procrastination the way lead does.
Engine and generation
Volvo D3-110 (110 hp) up to hull #73; D3-150 (150 hp) with a five-blade Max-Prop from #74. On hull #1, YACHT’s testers found engine noise intrusive, worst in the aft cabin — listen under load on your sea trial.
Systems: price the ownership, not the purchase
Generator, aircon, watermaker, laundry, davits, bow thruster — functionally essential, since twin rudders get almost no prop wash — and the optional stern thruster. The Amel School’s buyer guidance identifies “the sheer number of systems” as the defining maintenance challenge of any Amel. Write a full function test under load into the survey contract.
Electrics
24 V service network; gel 600 Ah standard, with late and Evolution boats on Mastervolt lithium at 800 Ah. On pre-Evolution boats, scrutinise any lithium retrofit: an induction galley without a properly engineered lithium bank is a marker of improvisation.
Decks
The moulded gelcoat “teak” is a house speciality: no caulking, nothing to leak. It fades in the tropics — cosmetics, not damage. Real teak was an option; if fitted, inspect it as you would any teak deck.

Everything Amel changed on the Evolution — glass instead of Plexiglas, forty more horsepower, lithium, the ban on gas, 200 extra litres of grey water, a hardtop handrail — reads as the first owners’ complaint list. For 2017–2022 boats, that list is your inspection programme.
Amel 50 price and market: the boat that doesn’t depreciate
The Amel 50 market is, for this genre, unusually alive. As of August 2026 there are around 13 boats on YachtWorld and another 9–14 on European platforms — Annonces du Bateau, bateauavendre.fr, Boat24, Youboat. The French platforms are mandatory: they carry a French brand better than YachtWorld does.
Price anchors (asking, August 2026): 2017–2020 hulls roughly €850,000–1,070,000; 2022–2023 Evolution boats €1.1–1.4 million; a near-new 2025 boat at Sizun & Charpentier at €1.5 million including VAT. Gaïa (2020) sold in Tahiti at $950,000. For context, a new boat’s base price was €790,000 ex-VAT at launch (2017/18) and €1,050,000 ex-VAT by June 2025. In other words, a five-year-old boat today asks close to what she cost new: the yard’s order backlog and the model’s reputation hold residual value in a way production fleets never see.
The September 2026 premiere of the Amel 50.2 has not softened prices so far — brokers are selling “one of the last” Evolutions as a feature, not a discount. Geography: the mass of listings sits in France and Italy, then Spain and the Canaries, with a scattered tail — Panama, Fiji, Turkey, Tahiti — that traces the owners’ circumnavigation routes.

Amel 50 vs Hallberg-Rassy, Oyster — and the Super Maramu at half the money
Hallberg-Rassy 50 is the principal external rival and the principal technical counter-argument. The Interesting Sailboats blog runs the numbers: the HR50 carries 7.40 tonnes of ballast against the Amel’s 5.36 on comparable draft, and concludes the Swede is the better boat when the weather turns — while conceding that the European Yacht of the Year jury saw it differently. The philosophies split cleanly: Hallberg-Rassy is a sailboat first and a home second; Amel, the reverse.
Oyster 495 / 565 is the British answer: comparable money, more custom and more helm, less system-out-of-the-box.
Contest 49CS, the Moody DS line, Discovery 55 are neighbours in the glass-sheltered luxury genre, each with its own accent.
The internal alternative — a Super Maramu 2000 or Amel 54 at a third to half the price — is the liveliest argument in the fleet. For the classics: the ketch rig’s redundancy and easily-handled sail plan, the simplicity of a gas galley, and the “Henri’s boats” loyalty — if it works, don’t fix it. For the modern boat: induction and lithium, glass, a walk-through transom, a young hull, and — decisive for owners past sixty — even less physical work. Open questions
This dossier doesn’t pretend to omniscience. Unconfirmed: the hull number and fate of the boat dismasted in Polynesia (repair, insurance); whether any internal Amel bulletin on halyard wrap exists — the owners’ group archive sits behind a login, and several quote attributions in the public record are cache-recovered; the stability curve — no AVS or STIX has ever been published, and the only route to numbers is requesting the ISO 12217 stability booklet from the yard during purchase. Real daily runs and Atlantic crossing times for the 50 specifically belong to the people who’ve sailed her; their testimony will join the next revision. And “five of forty” remains a forum participant’s estimate.
