The boat that had to be better than a legend
The Super Maramu 2000 had five hundred hulls, a cult of owners, and — later — SV Delos with an audience of millions. Replacing a boat like that is a thankless assignment: any change will be read as betrayal. The Amel 54 arrived in 2005 and lived only six years — a shorter run than any big Amel of her era. And yet, inside the Amel world, people say something unexpected about her.

Who this boat is for: a couple with a circumnavigation plan who want Amel’s “integrated cruising system” in its most modern ketch form — with a factory staysail, a proper walk-around aft cabin, and volume the SM2000 never had; a buyer prepared to pay for systemic complexity in money and maintenance discipline.
Who it isn’t for: anyone who wants the Amel philosophy for minimum money (that’s the SM2000, at half the price); anyone unwilling to live with an electronic engine and temperamental furlers; anyone who loves bright modern interiors (that’s the Amel 55 and everything after).
Which Amel is this, exactly
The Amel 54 (2005–2011) is the last old-school Amel ketch and the last boat designed before the Berret-Racoupeau era… probably. The design attribution is an open contradiction between sources:
- Berthon and Cruising World credit “Henri Amel” / “Amel Design Group”; Boat-Specs says “Amel Design Office.”
- The broker Caraibe Yachts, listing a 2005 hull, states “Architect: Carteau” — Jacques Carteau, the yard’s long-time technical director, Henri Amel’s right-hand man, later CEO.
- The French site mersetbateaux.com asserts: “Amel 54 (2005): Architecte Jean Berret et Olivier Racoupeau.”
Berret-Racoupeau are firmly documented on the 64 (2010), 55 (2011), 50 (2017) and 60 (2019). Their authorship of the 54 looks like an outlier — but we record both sides and leave the question open. Do not confuse her with the Amel 55, the following model on a new mould by a different designer, or with the Amel 50 and 60, the sloops of the new era.
The yard: see the Amel page
The yard’s story — the blind founder, the employee shareholders, La Rochelle — lives on the Amel page and in the Super Maramu 2000 dossier. What belongs here is this: the 54 is a boat of a transitional moment. Henri Amel died in 2005, the year of her premiere. The 54 is the yard’s first big project without him and the last before outside architects arrived. Hence the attribution dispute: the boat was drawn by the house of Amel at the moment Amel himself was leaving it.
What kind of boat is this — if you’re seeing her for the first time
Formally, an evolution of the Super Maramu: the same enclosed centre cockpit with a hard dodger, the same ketch rig, the same proprietary C-Drive transmission running the shaft through the keel fin, the same watertight subdivision. The factory brochure: “Four watertight bulkheads define six watertight compartments.” The hull-to-deck is a monolithic bonded joint with no conventional seam, and there is no teak on deck.
What changed — per Kinney, who knows both boats professionally:
The rig. “The largest and most obvious difference on casual examination is that the 54 was designed with an inner forestay that carries a staysail… the boat balances nicely, and it is an improvement for heavy weather sailing.” A standard staysail on an inner forestay — something the SM2000 never had. The 54 was also the first Amel with swept spreaders.
Hull and volume. “The 54’s hull is a more modern design… much broader in the aft sections than her older sister. This results in a significantly larger interior volume.” The aft cabin gained a bed you can walk around; the head moved into the forepeak.
The deck. Flush locker hatches — “better esthetically… On the downside, the hatches have a much higher tendency to leak.” Twin windlasses and better anchor handling.
The engine. “Amel never really found the perfect engine for the 54. Most of these boats were equipped with the Volvo D3” — an electronic engine, and a chapter of its own below. Some late Gold Line hulls carry a 140 hp VW Marine diesel instead (documented on hull #165, ULTIMO).
Tankage is 900 litres of fuel and 900 litres of water (factory figures, corroborated by Cruising World’s 237 + 237 US gallons). The “675/600 L” figures circulating on aggregator sites belong to the Amel 50 — a different boat.
Production total: an open contradiction with a clear preponderance. The aggregator sailboat-cruising.com writes “approximately 50 units” — and discloses on the same page that the text was written with the help of Gemini. Berthon: “A total of 173 Amel 54 yachts were built between 2005 and 2011.” Documented hulls — #6, #8, #019, #035, #098, #113, #122, #128, #153, #164, #165, #168, #171 — make “~50” impossible. We adopt ~173 as the best-supported figure, flagged as a brokerage claim, not a yard-certified one.
Living with her: the people with miles
People buy the Amel 54 for a formula: one watchkeeper runs everything without leaving the cockpit. Electric in-mast furling for main and mizzen, electric Bamar furlers for genoa and staysail, electric winches with dual controls, a bow thruster — all on 24 volts.
“On a CW test sail last year, in 16 knots on the beam with choppy cross seas off Florida, the 54 logged an effortless 9 knots.” Amel’s American agent Joel Potter: “If you can lift 50 pounds, you can do everything on this boat yourself.”
“We ourselves have sailed across three oceans and have experienced rough weather, but we always felt comfortable thanks to features like the deep, protected centre cockpit, solid guardrails, and systems designed to be operated without leaving the safety of the helm. The boat is robust and remarkably reliable in all conditions.”
“I’m the happy owner of an Amel 54 and I can tell you it’s an excellent boat — she moves well, holds the sea very well, and I’ve weathered memorable storms without trouble.” Another, four months after buying: “What surprised me most is her directional stability!”
The brochure’s claim that “200 miles a day runs are easily obtained” gets indirect confirmation: Kinney’s Bermuda–Martinique delivery covered 1,158 miles in seven and a half days — even though mid-passage, in squalls to 25 knots, “the piece that the French call a ‘saddle’ that attaches the main sheet blocks to the boom ripped out of the boom.” Amel’s service network in Martinique took over the repair.
The heavy-weather technique is inherited Amel doctrine. Don Myers (Amel 53 Harmonie, circumnavigator, in SAIL Magazine): “We sailed around the world and never once used our storm sails. Whenever the wind got up over 30 knots, we sailed with partially furled genoa and mizzen.” To that pairing the 54 adds the factory staysail — the yard’s direct answer to the SM2000’s main heavy-weather gap.
The honest other side of the same coin is the circumnavigation of SY Carango (hull #035, Peter and Vicky Forbes): a total Volvo engine failure in French Polynesia (2016), a windlass failure, and a “Mid Pacific RIGGING FAILURE” (the blog’s own title, June 17, 2016) — and a completed circumnavigation. On Amel’s support during the crisis, Forbes was blunt: “support service is appalling” (over a delayed windlass relay). A boat that goes around the world, and a boat whose systems fail on the long haul. Both things are true at once.
The great debate: an integrated system in the electronic age
The Amel philosophy — everything integrated, everything on a button — was born in the era of simple machinery. The SM2000 carried furlers of the yard’s own design and a mechanical engine. The 54 carried the same philosophy onto bought-in electric drives and an electronic common-rail diesel. That is the fault line the Amel community still argues across.
The Bamar furlers. Kinney: “The 54 was built with Bamar furlers for the genoa and staysail that were very problematic, to the point that Bamar offered significant discounts for redesigned units.”
“The motor in both my barely used BAMAR EFJ furlers are shot (=dead)… I am now looking for at least the 3rd (that I know of) but possibly 4th set of electric furlers on AMELIT in 13 years.”
A fourth set of furlers in thirteen years — on a boat whose entire point is that the sails go away at the push of a button. The retrofit paths are documented: Harken (owner threads on AYOG) and Reckmann, which launched a plug-and-play retrofit kit “for all Amel models” in April 2019. Budget anchor: a rigger’s estimate of about US$8,000 per system (quoted for the related Super Maramu furler; no 54-specific figure found).
The Volvo D3-110. A five-cylinder, 2.4-litre common-rail unit — a marinized Volvo automotive block. Electronic means: a boost sensor can shut the engine down mid-ocean (the owner of Amelia, hull #019: repaired in Martinique, “cost 420 euros”); diagnostics require a certified technician with a VODIA tester; parts ship from Sweden. The cam belt interval is 1,400–1,500 hours, and a belt failure is catastrophic; the owner of NO STRESS (hull #15) reports alternator-belt life of ~300 hours against ~1,200 in the manual. Kinney: “Amel never really found the right engine for the 54.” No documented repower to another brand was found; one 2005 hull had its D3 replaced with another D3 in 2020.
The counterpoint. The defence says: this is the price of the most couple-manageable 17-metre ocean boat of her time, and Amel’s service network genuinely fixes boats worldwide — the Carango saga and Kinney’s boom saddle were both closed by exactly that network. The prosecution says: the SM2000 did the same job with less to go wrong.
The community has never closed this argument. Neither do we.
Buying a used Amel 54: problems and what to check

Furlers: item number one
Establish exactly what is fitted: original Bamar EFJ, Bamar’s redesign, Harken, or Reckmann? A boat with furlers already replaced is worth her asking price; a boat with original Bamars carries a five-figure bill inside her.
Engine
Which one, first of all: D3-110 or VW Marine 140 (late Gold Line)? For the D3: hours, upgrade history, an ECU fault-memory read with a VODIA tester at survey, cam-belt age against the 1,400–1,500-hour interval, heat exchangers. Real hours seen on the market: 1,940; 2,604; “under 5,000.”
C-Drive
The transmission itself is considered reliable, but alignment is critical. Kinney (Patreon): setting the engine to the C-Drive “is a CRITICAL maintenance procedure. If ignored or done incorrectly, there will be expensive failures.” A documented case from SV Malaka Queen: “The root cause of the Coupling and C-drive input shaft failure was a collapsed engine mount.” Check the seals (three on the propeller shaft), the oil, the service history, the engine mounts.
Lip seals in general
Kinney counts “about a dozen” high-attention seals: three on each of the four furling gearboxes, the bow-thruster shafts, three on the main propeller shaft.
Electrics
24V throughout; the watertight bulkheads make new wiring runs hard — “new wiring often must be run through existing, and sometimes crowded, conduits” (Bill Rouse). One documented risk of its own: the AYOG thread “AMEL 54 outhaul protector burn out Mid Atlantic” — a 100-amp fuse in the outhaul circuit nearly caused a fire mid-ocean; an electrical engineer in the thread flags the factory fuse sizing, identical on at least hulls #122 and #128. Verify the furler and outhaul circuit protection has been corrected.
Deck hatches
The flush locker lids tend to leak (Kinney). An owner on Hisse-et-Oh reported the forward locker hatch leaking in heavy seas — with consequences for the bow thruster and electrical panels below. Hose-test them and look from inside.
Main-furling and outhaul gearboxes
Rouse cites a survey photo of an outhaul gearbox with “no grease, and the gears were worn so much that they did not last another week” (~$800 to replace). Open them and check the grease.
Hull
Solid laminate below the waterline with the yard’s proprietary anti-osmotic treatment (per the spec sheet of hull #113, 2009); sandwich construction in the deck. No osmosis epidemic surfaced for the 54, but moisture-meter readings on the deck are standard practice.
Rig
Amel’s first swept spreaders. The French forum consensus (translated): “The 54 was the first Amel with swept spreaders, and so had rig-tuning problems. Resolved and reliable today.” The rumour of “a few dismastings” on early hulls did not survive a targeted search: on AYOG, Bill Rouse writes plainly, “Dismasting is a major event and we’d certainly hear about it.” We leave it recorded as unverified. On a 15–20-year-old boat, standing-rigging age and a re-rig budget are part of the deal.
Hydraulic passerelle (option)
Kinney: “reputation for constant mechanical problems and serious corrosion issues. I haven’t met anyone who was happy with it.”
Ancillaries
Onan generator, watermaker, Webasto heating, air conditioning, and the freezer with its raw-water circulation cooling (“a maintenance nightmare” — Kinney): run everything under load.
Amel 54 price and market: dearer than the legend, cheaper than the heir
Snapshot, August 2026: roughly 7–8 boats on the major platforms, nearly all in the Mediterranean and France. Annonces du Bateau: 8 Amel 54s listed, prices from €375,000 to €619,000. Specifics: 2005 — €399,000 (Caraibe, sold); 2006 — €430,000 (Saint-Raphaël), €460,000 (Sizun & Charpentier), €530,000 (Sanary); 2007 — €579,950; the 2011 Gold Line hull #165 — €619,000.
New price: Cruising World (2007) listed $965,000; the BOTY 2007 spec table shows $975,000. A period price in euros was not found in a primary source. French owners in 2013 were already complaining of runaway Amel price inflation, with a seven-year-old boat asking around €595,000.
The market mechanics are pure Amel. Kinney: “the market for Amels everywhere is really tight. In the US pretty much every decent boat is sold before it is listed on the open market.” Sizun & Charpentier is reported to handle over 40% of European pre-owned Amel transactions — the best boats move through waiting lists, not listings. Actual sold prices (as opposed to asking) are not published.
Where she sits in the line, in money: SM2000 at roughly $230–350k; the 54 at $400–650k; the 55 at $695k–1.2M. The middle step: more modern than the legend, half the price of the heir.

Amel 54 vs Super Maramu, Amel 55 and Hallberg-Rassy 54: what buyers actually compare
Amel Super Maramu 2000 — the principal alternative and the in-house rival. Half the price or nearly so, furlers of Amel’s own simpler design, a mechanical engine, a vast fleet and community, and the SV Delos halo on top. Kinney, after a week aboard a 54: “we decided that we wouldn’t, ourselves, want to trade up to a 54. But we certainly understand why other people would.” The dossier is live — read them as a pair.
Amel 55 (2011–2018, Berret-Racoupeau, new mould) — brighter, faster, more modern, and considerably more expensive. The old guard on AYOG is sceptical: “the installed base has not upgraded to the new boat… If a company loses the installed base is not a good sign” — against which the owner of 55 hull #65: “I think the 55 is a great Amel.”
Hallberg-Rassy 54 (Frers, 2006–2012, 44 hulls per the yard itself) — the direct same-year classmate: a sloop, a conventional shaft, a light Scandinavian interior. An HR owner on Sailing Anarchy found the Amel “more cramped and dark inside than our HR” and never accepted “the concept of that propeller on the keel,” but conceded: “the amels are very clever… comes out of the factory to be an ‘armchair’ sailing experience.”
Oyster 54/56, Discovery 55 — the British league in the same money. Yachting Monthly quotes Amel’s UK dealer positioning her against “Hallberg-Rassy, Oyster, Discovery and now Gunfleet” as “a relative bargain.”

This dossier doesn’t pretend to omniscience. The production total of ~173 is Berthon’s figure, not the yard’s; a query to the AYOG hull registry or to Chantiers Amel would close it (any documented hull above #171 would move the total). The design attribution will be settled by period French press from 2004–2006 or by the “Architecte” line of the original brochure. Numbering restarting at 1 is near-certain (the 54’s hulls run 6–171 while SM numbering had reached the three-hundreds) but has no direct factory confirmation. The early-hull dismasting rumour is neither confirmed nor disproven. Motoring fuel burn and real-world range are still unmined. The period new price in euros was not found. Actual transaction prices remain behind brokers’ doors. The bulkhead count — the factory’s “4 bulkheads / 6 compartments” against an aggregator’s “5” — we take from the factory, and log the discrepancy.
