What you’d actually do with her
This is a heavy, seaworthy boat for long routes with a small crew. Typical use: season-long passages along an Atlantic coast, crossing Biscay or the Channel in any reasonable weather, holidays built around legs of two to five days, a transatlantic, and at the far end a solo circumnavigation without stops. She is slower than modern boats of the same length, but she holds her course by herself, needs no constant hand on the helm, and keeps sailing in weather that keeps most coastal boats in the marina. Two people run her comfortably; with experience, one. The hull is designed to heave to, so the crew can stop and rest at sea. Her draft lets her into small tidal harbours. Not her genre: racing, fast day sailing, and marina living for comfort’s sake, since her interior is noticeably smaller than modern boats of this length.
The boat people choose when they decide to sail around the world without stopping
In 2018 eighteen sailors left Les Sables-d’Olonne to repeat Knox-Johnston’s voyage: solo around the world, non-stop, no GPS, no autopilot, just a sextant and a windvane. Each of them could pick any long-keeled design in the world under 36 feet. Six of the eighteen, a third of the fleet, picked the same one: the Rustler 36.
First, second and third across the finish line: three Rustler 36s. Jean-Luc Van Den Heede, aged 73, sailed his Matmut around the planet in 212 days, pitchpoled in a 65-knot storm short of Cape Horn, and finished with the same mast he started with. Nobody else in that fleet capsized and kept their rig.
The boat herself is older than most of that race’s entrants. The design dates from the late 1970s, drawn by Holman & Pye at the end of a line that runs from the Folkboat through the Stella and the Twister. She has been built in Falmouth since 1980, first by Orion Marine, then by Rustler Yachts, from the same moulds, for 45 years without interruption. Total production in all that time: somewhere between 120 and 126 hulls. The yard still builds a few each year, by hand.
None of this means the boat is without weaknesses. She has a documented list of them, and this dossier takes it apart in full. It means that when the stakes are survival in the Southern Ocean, the people who study the question hardest keep voting for her with their money and a year of their lives.

The yard that has built one hull for 45 years
Kim Holman was not a career naval architect. He came to design through his own racing, and his office, Holman & Pye, drew the family line that produced this boat: the Stella of 1959 (in essence an enlarged Folkboat), the Twister of 1964, the Rustler 31 of 1965. The Rustler 36 is the last and largest link in that chain, designed in the late 1970s and looking, as PBO put it plainly, like a big version of the Twister. Holman died in 2006, having outlived the era when anyone drew hulls like this at all.
The boat’s production life was made not by her designer but by a moulder. Ralph Hogg bought the tooling, founded Orion Marine in Falmouth, and started building in 1980; in 1984 the firm became Rustler Yachts. Some early hulls were moulded under subcontract by Cygnus Marine next door, in that Falmouth where boatyards stood fence to fence. Rustler bought Rival Bowman in 2002, moved to new premises in Penryn in 2005, and is run today by Adrian Jones and Nick Offord. The moulds are the same ones.
The yard’s economics rest on a paradox: a late-1970s design that people still order new, at £200,000 and up, while the used market offers the same hull at a third of the price. The buyer of a new Rustler 36 is not paying for the design. They are paying for the hands.

What kind of boat is this — if you’re seeing her for the first time
The Rustler 36 is a 10.8-metre fibreglass sailing yacht built around one task: carrying a small crew far, in safety. Three things separate her from anything in a charter marina.
The keel is the hull. There are no keel bolts. The keel is moulded as part of the hull, and 3.4 tonnes of lead are cast and sealed inside it. There is nothing to fall off. That ballast is 45% of the boat’s weight, among the highest figures in the class: knocked flat by wind and sea, she comes back up. The price is weight and wetted surface, and in light airs she is frankly lazy.
The rudder hangs on the transom, sheltered behind the keel. The fin runs along half the bottom of the boat, with the rudder hung aft of it, protected from floating debris, nets and pot lines. She holds a course almost unaided, which is exactly why she will sail for days under a windvane with no one at the helm. The trade-off is her turning circle and her manners in reverse, best described by the owner in PBO’s test, who admits he often backs out from between the pontoons rather than argue with her.
She has been in continuous production for 45 years. This is not a classic that went out of build. She is a current model at a working yard in Penryn, which means a living factory with documentation, parts and an opinion on every hull in the series: a luxury almost no boat of the 1980s can offer her buyer.
Total production over 45 years is 120 to 126 hulls. For scale, Hallberg-Rassy built 802 of its 352 model in thirteen years. The Rustler 36 is a scarce commodity, and the used market reflects it.
Living with her: the people who’ve crossed oceans aboard
The Rustler 36 does not pretend to be fast. On passage she settles around 6 knots in anything from 10 to 28 knots of wind, with the first reef going in near 20 knots.
“On passage she cruises at roughly 6 knots in winds from 10 to 28 knots... put her onto a beam reach with her large genoa fully unfurled and she’ll tramp along comfortably at closer to 7.5 knots.”
What she does hold is a course, in a way modern boats do not. During his test Kent took her through the Raz de Sein, the tidal gate of Brittany, under windvane without touching the helm:
“The boat remained resolutely on course throughout, so much so that we were able to cook a three-course dinner along the way.”
PBO’s sea trial adds a nuance a buyer should hear. In the light patches she barely held pace with a Trapper 500, but at 16 knots over the deck she, in the tester’s words, moved into another gear, accelerating to 5.8 knots and pulling away. This is a boat tuned for real wind. A light-air Mediterranean season is not her element.
Storm behaviour is what people buy her for, and here the first-hand voices say more than any test. Mark Slats, second in the 2018 Golden Globe:
“It was a massive knockdown through 120°, then I suffered another which filled the boat right up to the level of the nav station... after pumping by hand for an hour, and with two electric pumps working, I managed to get the boat dry.”
The boat survived both knockdowns and finished second. Van Den Heede, after his full pitchpole, repaired a displaced shroud fitting with shackles and Spectra and carried on racing. Heaving to, the standard resting technique on a long-keeled boat, “presented no challenges” in PBO’s trial.
A windvane is not an accessory here but part of the concept. The consensus among ocean-going owners is a Hydrovane, with its own independent rudder:
“In a gale it has a big advantage because it is not steering the boat’s rudder, but has its own. This little rudder is far more efficient than the big rudder.”
The legend debate: reputation versus fit-out
Every boat in this canon carries one argument its community cannot close. The Rustler 36’s is an uncomfortable one: whether the legend is as good below the surface as she is on it.
The charge was laid not by a critic but by an owner. Bill Attwood bought a 1992 Rustler 36, a boat with a circumnavigation already behind her, and during his refit wrote down what he found under the joinery:
“Mooring cleats – no backing plates, only penny washers... Chainplates inaccessible without surgery... Diesel tank inaccessible without removing engine... S/s tanks sitting direct on GRP = sitting in water = rusted... None of holes/apertures in deck sealed.”
His conclusion: the R36 has the basics of a sound offshore boat, but she is not a voyaging yacht “off the peg.” If he ordered a new one, he wrote, he would supervise the whole build in person.
The defence rests on two points, both honest. First, the yard did not dispute the list. Adrian Jones replied to Attwood that a lot had changed in the intervening years, and boats built after the 2005 move to Penryn are assembled differently from the Orion hulls of the 1980s and 90s. Second, the scale of the charge itself: every item on Attwood’s list is fit-out. Not one concerns the hull, the keel or the rudder. A hull of that same era carried Susie Goodall through a pitchpole off Cape Horn; the mast went, but “hull OK” was her own report from the emergency beacon, and hull and deck came through intact.
The honest takeaway for a buyer: nobody disputes the Rustler 36’s structure, the Southern Ocean included. Build quality of the fit-out is a function of year and origin. Early Orion hulls, home-completed boats from bare mouldings, and factory boats from Penryn are three different yachts wearing one name. Attwood’s list is not a verdict. It is a survey programme, and it follows below.
Buying a used Rustler 36: problems and what to check

Provenance is question number one
Before viewing, establish from the papers who moulded the hull (Orion, Cygnus or Rustler), who completed her (the factory, or an owner working from a bare hull, a common practice in the early years), and the hull number. Home completion is not a disqualification, but standards, as broker Yachtsnet puts it, “may vary considerably,” and the price must reflect it: a bare 1984 hull finished over nine years was listed at £42,000 against £75,000 for a factory boat of the same generation.
Attwood’s list: your inspection programme for Orion-era hulls (1980s–1990s)
Cleats without backing plates. Hollow core at the edges of the cabin top. Hatches with rounded corners fitted to cutouts with square ones. Chainplates that cannot be reached without surgery. A diesel tank that cannot come out without the engine coming out first. Stainless tanks sitting directly on the GRP, where they sit in water and rust. Cockpit lockers that are not watertight. An anchor-locker drain too small to be useful. Deck apertures never sealed. Each item found is a bargaining point; all of them together are a refit budget.
Toerail and the hull-to-deck joint
The aluminium toerail is bolted through the hull-to-deck joint, a design PBO’s reviewer flagged back in 2008 as his one real reservation on deck, for the cost and complexity of repair. The refit of Goodall’s boat confirmed the mechanism: toerail fitting seals had let water in, some fittings had corroded through, and resealing meant removing the internal locker joinery. Look for staining inside along the hull flange. That is not cosmetics, that is the diagnosis.
The encapsulated keel
No bolts, so nothing to detach, but after any grounding check the integrity of the shell: cracking in the laminate at the bottom of the keel, and moisture in the sump. The lead inside neither rusts nor swells (unlike the iron encapsulations of some rivals), so finding moisture is not a catastrophe, but it is a reason to open, dry and reseal. Batteries and tanks live in that deep sump; inspect them while you are there.
Osmosis by decade
Early hulls were moulded with clear gelcoat below the waterline, which at least makes lay-up defects visible. Isophthalic resin and a double gelcoat came later; the yard has never published the transition year, and the industry-wide shift came in the mid-1990s. The practical filter: boats with an epoxy barrier “from new” and hulls from the mid-1990s onward carry less risk, while for 1980s hulls a moisture survey is mandatory.
Mast: deck or keel
Most production boats have a deck-stepped mast. A keel-stepped spar existed as a rare option as early as 1990 and became standard on current boats. For ocean plans keel-stepped is the preference (the GGR lessons: Goodall swapped deck for keel during her refit, and Van Den Heede shortened his keel-stepped mast further still). On deck-stepped boats, check the step and the compression post under it.
The engine as a date stamp
Yanmar 3GM or 3GM30F marks an early boat; Beta 28 or 34 the 2000s; Nanni N3.30 around 2012; Yanmar 3YM30 the recent ones. An engine from the wrong era means a repower. Ask for the paperwork.
The windvane
If one is fitted, inspect the transom mounting. The 2022 Golden Globe produced a string of failures at exactly that point: a broken Hydrovane bracket for Guillou, an exhausted stock of Windpilot vanes for Tomy, who ended up steering with blades cut from a hatch cover and the heads door. On any boat with an ocean biography, the history of vane repairs is part of the survey.
Rustler 36 price and market: a scarce commodity with a fresh price tag
The used market mirrors the production run: scarce. Active listings worldwide number a handful, three to six at a time, nearly all of them in Britain. The price ladder reads by provenance and decade:
- home completions and early hulls from about £42,000;
- factory boats of the 1990s at £65,000–95,000, the bulk of the market;
- late factory examples considerably higher, reaching territory where the new-boat price comes into view;
- a new boat from the yard at £200,000 and up.
A calibration point from the archive: in 2008 PBO quoted the used range at £75,000–130,000 with a new boat “from £170,000.” Eighteen years later the boat has not become cheaper, and the advice Tim Shears heard back then “from every knowledgeable quarter” still stands: Rustlers maintain their value particularly well. A living yard with an order book for new hulls props up the used market from below, a mechanism this canon already knows from Boréal.

Rustler 36 vs Vancouver 34, Tradewind 35 and Hallberg-Rassy 352
Vancouver 34 is the standing rival of the British forum duels. Long keel too, ocean reputation too, cutter rig as standard, and a comparable production run of around 120. The forum verdict is irreverent: “Based on looks alone a Rustler everytime,” with one R36 owner adding that his friend’s Vancouver 34 usually cannot keep up. Vancouver buyers choose the cutter rig and the practicality; Rustler buyers, the lines and the pace.
Tradewind 35 is the ultra-heavy full-keel option, D/L near 500 against the Rustler’s 385, with roughly 70 built. More conservative still, slower still, and cheaper at the point of entry. The choice of sailors for whom even the Rustler is not traditional enough.
Rival 36 is Peter Brett’s last design and the Rustler’s exact contemporary, in build from 1980. Fin keel with a skeg: handier in the marina, more modern on the helm, less protection for the rudder. One telling detail: Rustler Yachts bought Rival Bowman in 2002, so the rival is now serviced by the rival.
Hallberg-Rassy 352 is what buyers consider when the budget allows a step into the volume premium market: 802 hulls against 125, an incomparably deeper used market, more interior, fin keel and skeg, encapsulated iron ballast against the Rustler’s lead. More boat for the money, less exclusivity, and less protection around the underwater gear.
Contessa 32 is the smaller sister in spirit, from the same Folkboat bloodline, and carries the best published stability figure in the class, an AVS of 156°. Four feet shorter and markedly tighter below: she gets chosen with the heart, where the Rustler gets chosen for months of living aboard.
The community’s formula: maximum tradition, Tradewind; the practical cutter, Vancouver; volume and market depth, HR 352; helm feel and manoeuvrability, Rival; the pure smaller legend, Contessa 32; the balance of all of it, with protected underwater gear and a living yard, Rustler 36.

Open questions
This dossier doesn’t pretend to omniscience. The year the keel-stepped mast became standard has never been published by the yard, and neither has the transition year to isophthalic resin and double gelcoat; both questions close only through the Rustler Owners Association or the yard itself, and our enquiries are in. Cygnus Marine’s share of early moulding rests on a single brokerage listing, too thin to generalise. New-boat prices of the 1980s live in the paper archives of Yachting Monthly. The name of Bill Attwood’s boat never appears in his published comments. Owner answers will join the next revision.

What are the known problems of the Rustler 36?

Rustler 36 or Vancouver 34?
The Vancouver offers a standard cutter rig and a touch more practicality; the Rustler is faster under sail and holds value better. Both are long-keeled British ocean cruisers with comparable production runs. The forum consensus on looks and pace favours the Rustler.
Is the Rustler 36 suitable for living aboard?
For a couple living on passage, yes: that is her genre. But the interior is closer to a classic 32-footer’s, with a narrow hull and a deep sump eating the volume. If marina liveaboard comfort is the priority, a Hallberg-Rassy 352 offers noticeably more boat for the money.
